I know this is an old worn out topic, but it seems to me that is a pretty low income for the best in any field. Especially since, whether you call it a game or a sport, it is field he will probably not be at the top for most of his career. I hope like Efren he is at the top a very long time, but the income still doesn't seem commensurate with being the best. Then again a teacher's salary isn't very commensurate with their importance, I guess both figures indicate what society values.
There is no accurate measure of a man's worth. There are athletes who do much more that pool player to be at the top of their sport who earn far less than what Mr. Immonen has made this year. And athletes who also are far less dedicated who earn much more.
As Mr. Grady Matthews said in an interview once, playing pool for a living beats digging a ditch.
Andre Agassi just wrote a memoir which strips a lot of the glamor off of being a professional tennis player. Even though he made millions the reader comes away with the thought that he would traded all that money for another life, a peaceful life with less pressure and less intensity.
It is sad that pool players travel the world to ply their trade and they frequently barely make expenses even with relatively high finishes. But what is equally sad is that for all this effort very few people get to see and appreciate the tremendous amount of talent and heart these men and women bring to the table.
It is a sad state of affairs when sports requiring some much skill and nerve are made almost obscure by made-for-tv events such as Fear Factor.
One year when Nick Varner won all or almost all the professional events in the USA he barely topped $100,000. That was a landmark amount at the time. Only a tiny tiny fraction of the people who watch sports will ever know what a great achievement that was to win so many events against full fields. But as unrewarding as it was financially, it had to be a much greater reward spiritually and still beats digging a ditch for the money.
Excellence is excellence the dollar figure is only important to Mika and ESPN. ?
For public school teachers to make a higher salary that means everyone agrees to pay higher taxes not likely.
