Will Steve Mizerak ever stage a comeback?

Last I heard he was a professor at some school in New Jersey. I was hoping maybe the IPT would breathe some life into him and get him back into the fold. I think the sport could really benefit from his return.

Any thoughts or inside knowledge?

I think with his health from suffering a stroke, I don't think a comeback is going to happen. He has been in bad health for a few years now unfortunately.

I believe Steve had a pretty major stroke. If that is the case, I seriously doubt that he would be able to play any where near the level he used to play at. A stroke just messes up too many parts of your body and mind imho. You're thinking is usually impaired, you have some paralysis on one side of your body, etc. That's an awful lot to overcome.

Professional level pool forces one to be performing at peak level. I wish Steve well and I certainly hope I'm wrong but my experience tells me this is not a remote possibility.

He has, or he did, a pool room in Florida and the last time I saw him he could hardly walk. I doubt his health would permit him to make a come back.

When i last saw Steve at the U S Open Tribute he could barely walk and was using a wheel chair and he did give me his autograph although it was very hard for him to do because of the partial paralyasis in his hand. I doubt we will ever see Steve play competitive pool again. That is a darn shame as he has alot to offer this game. Maybe somewhere sometime and somehow he will open a small school to teach people that want to learn the real art of 14.1. I believe Steve owns a pool hall in Florida some place. He and his lovely wife are always in my prayers..............mike

The Miz

I was fortunate enough to have about a five minute conversation with him in the parking lot at the US Open last year. I had never met the man before. He is one of the nicest people I've ever spoken with! I was sitting on the tailgate of my truck eating a sandwich before the finals on Sunday (I just couldn't do one more hot dog from the stand in the convention center!) and he rolled past on his wheelchair. Stopped and asked me where I'd gotten the sandwich because it looked delicious. We talked about all the great games I'd watched of his and how I wished he was out there playing again. He said it wasn't for a lack of wanting to! He was in great spirits and is very independent despite the wheels.

His speech is slurred, he has limited use of his legs and one side of his body but I can tell you that his mental faculties are still very much there. It's simply his body that's let him down as a result of the stroke. Based on his current condition I doubt very seriously that he'd be playing again. Sure do miss him at the table!

Brian in VA - all the best Miz!

Yeah, it's really a shame the Miz can't play anymore. Talking about one of the smoothest cueing actions ever...

Steve was one of those guys that made the weekly tourney at West End Billiards so tough. You could walk in and see Hopkins, Mizerak, Ray Martin, Jack Colavita and about a half dozen more world beaters playing. It was like a weekly Pro tour stop

Yep and I bet half of them had Palmers or Balabuskas.
Steve at one time own the room in Metuchen on RT27. The Room in Florida is I think just north of West Palm Beach. I am spacing on the name of the town. Lake ??Something I think??

It's really too bad. The Miz possessed one of the best strokes I've ever seen in pool, and I think quite a few people will back me up on that. Also, from what I've heard about the guy he had a great deal of character.

Sounds like you spent a little time in the area. Mizerak's dad had a room in Perth Amboy too.

I have an accu stats tape that features both Mike Sigel and Steve Mizerak. Although Steve gets demolished by a very inform Mike Sigel, I did get to witness a short 28 ball run and I have to say that as good as Sigel is, Mizerak is one of the most beautiful players to behold at the table. Smooth doesn't even begin to describe him.

I wish him all the best.

The tape you're referring to is from the 1992 U.S. Open that Sigel won. There's a tape from the 1989 U.S. Open with Mizerak and Sigel where The Miz plays beautifully and beats Sigel 150-8. That was the year Oliver Ortmann upset Mizerak in the finals.
