will this forum die

All in all, Mark's was a pretty good post. But as others have noted, the main forum consists of all types of posters. Those of us on the forum are involved with and love pool for a variety of reasons:

professional players
aspiring professionals
serious players
retired players
stakehorses and gamblers
pool instructors
pool students
room proprietors
equipment gurus
sponsors of the game
tournament organizers
benefactors of the game
fans of the game
new players getting excited about pool

Many who post fit into several of these categories. All these posters are what make this forum great, and not just the professionals, who certainly contribute in special ways at times.

It's the extraordinary variety of posters that will keep this forum alive and well.

TAP, TAP, TAP!!!!!!

Well put Purdman.

Mark, maybe you should just hang out in the "Ask a Pro" section since you put so much emphasis on their knowledge?.

See........Now that post above is just not necessary.....I am not about to kiss Mark's ass, but I wouldn't be so stupid as to tell him to leave.

There are only a handful of people on this board that have a "real" clue about this game....(most only think they have a clue)

Mark just happens to be one that really does have a clue about this game and based on what I hear and have read from his posts has done a lot of "hard" work learning this game......

Why would you want to tell him to stay away....There are alot of other (USLESS) posts like that that I wish I would see leave..

I've been playing pool for a long time. When I started, there were no pool schools. Good players didn't usually show you how to play. You learned by watching the better players and emulating the things you liked most about their games. Any knowledge that someone had was usually a guarded secret.

Now there are pool schools and bonefide instructors. However, because of what I described above, there is some distrust when someone says that you should perform something a certain way because many of us spent half our lives learning it differently the hard way. And, when someone shows you how to shoot a certain way, and they're a very good player, is that just something only they can do because of their physical abilities?

I tend to agree with Mark about the "feel" approach. Buddy Hall mentioned feel a lot when he was giving me lessons. He kept saying, "You have to feel the shot". I think the system approach is probably essential to beginning players but once you've hit thousands of shots, you have to start developing a "feel" for the shots and that's what you should rely on once you get to that level. Does this sound right Mark?

I apologize if I offended you Mark. I am just saying that most of the people on this forum are not pros. We have a section called "ASK THE PRO" do we not. I think when people ask questions on the main forum they are asking for opinions. So that is what they get. Yeah, people sling a little mud now and then, somehow that makes the forum more interesting. Just look at the views when something really gets going. Sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's not.
I can appriciate all you are doing for those who want to learn. I sat down with a guy that studied what happens when two spheres colide for 50 years. He handed me a book he had written that was about 600 pages long. Too much for me buddy. Life is to short for all that. I play for relaxation and fun. I am lucky that I started playing as a child. I am 55 now and will never be a pro at pool. Thats fine with me, I am still a solid player and enjoy every moment I am at the table.
Keep up the good works and good luck to you.
Purdman

Don's old but he's awnry. He don't give up without a gunfight...and sometimes might bank 10 in a row (like from out of no where in one pocket....I sawr' it!). :) His pool prozac had really kicked in that day...

Either we're the same age or not much changed from when you started to when I started..... I mentioned to someone a couple of months ago that I actually feel stupid now when it comes to pool. The last time I was involved in the pool world, everyone used the shafts that came with their cues, I think there were 2 different kinds of tips for the cues, and the only pool balls anyone worried about was the cue ball... no one knew the brand (centennials or aramith) I hear people talking different shafts, pool balls, aiming systems... I kinda feel like Rip Van Winkle... I was away from the pool world for something like 7 yrs... when I listen to people talk and look at all the gadgets, it feels like 20 yrs have passed.

Me and Purdy are the same age. Some day, if we ever do meet up, we'll probably be sitting in rockers telling whopping pool tales. I got some good stories and they get more spectacular as time marches on.

I think I realized there was a pool school about 12 years ago. Before that, I was unaware of any structured effort to teach anything about this game. And there certainly weren't any philanthropical pool players around me back then!

You've got a couple of yrs on me... not much ;) LOL, I didn't even know about it 12 yrs ago.... back then when we mentioned "pool school" someone was being taught a lesson that they didn't like.

Mark's pushing an "If you're not a pro, don't ever dare question a pro" elitist agends. That's a good intention?.
I don't think that's what he was pushing. I think he was put off by the way some pro's have been treated by some people here but that's it. I can appreciate his point of view... however, there has to be a happy medium w/in ourselves when it comes to msg boards on the internet... Mark was put off by something that didn't bother you... you were put off by something that didn't bother me. The bad thing about computers is that it's difficult to convey one's tone of voice when typing out your thoughts. I can understand Mark being disheartend by the lack of respect shown to a pro pool player on a pool forum. I can also understand where you might construe what he meant as being elitist. Me being the 3rd party from the outside looking in, didn't perceive any of it the way either of you did. You take the good with the bad & you roll with the punches on internet forums. Plain & simple. There are some that will be ignorant and hide behind a screen name and say ignorant things. There are some with anonymous screen names that are very reputible and aren't "hiding" anything but their real name from the many weirdo's in internet land. I will give props to Mark and anyone else that chooses to use their real name though.... Those of us that use our real names must stand behind what we say both on here & in person. For example... (and this is ONLY an example, I don't mean anything by it) You say that you think Mark is an elitist.... I could be wrong here but I'm guessing that if you ever met him in person, you're not going to just walk up to him and say "you're an elitist!". You also don't have to because no one know's who you are. On the flipside, if I call someone like DM a cantankerous old fool, I better damn well be prepared to do so in person.... and I would. What I say on here is no different than what I would say in person... I can't hide behind what I say here because I use my real name. WOW, did I go off on a tangent or what!??!?! LOL, it's the beer's fault.... I could & probably should go back and not only rease half of these ramblings, & edit typo's but I'm not.... not only would it be too much trouble, but someone somewhere might get a laugh outta this. :D

Mark, we've never met but we have some mutual friends. I was around the pool world for awhile in the late 80's & early 90's and remember you & your game. You were/still are??? a helluva player. Don't let the yahoo's run ya off again... stand yer ground... get on DM's good side & he might even take the heat for ya a time or two... :D

IMO, Mark stated his opinion as did you. I don't think any one of you should stop posting. However, from what I understand, Mr Tadd is an extremely knowledgeable Pro who just started posting again and I welcome his input. IMO ANYTIME a pro post on the main forum that is GREAT. I know a few Pros who are awesome people that can not share their real feelings/ideas on subject matter because they will be attacked....it has happened numerous times. I also know several folks who keep their pool related identity secret, thus allowing them to be "real" on the forums and goof off with everyone else. Mr. Tadd has come on here bearing his real identity and is showing his "real" self. Please don't ask him to refrain from sharing his ideas in the main forum.

FWIW, I wouldn't listen to some ball banger IF I was a Pro....and I may share those views with other ball bangers wanting to improve their game. Please bear in mind I am a ball banger and IF I have a question about my game I will consider ALL responses and then I would discuss it with people I KNOW. Internet hacks are just that....hacks....you have to weed thru a million ideas and concepts to get the "right" answer. And believe it or not, the "right" answer can be diffrent for diffrent people.

She's a ballbanger alright... got a bun in the oven to prove it. :D :D j/k... I like LS... we think alike on quite a few things... that's a rare occasion for me when it comes to women... Now that I think about it... I get along with more women on here than I do in real life... chicks in general are bitches but most of the chicks on here are kewl. ;) Ok LS... the lil ball banger is gonna be 3 mo old @ VF... that's still breast feedin' age... be sure to pump some extra b4 u leave so that we can put back a few together this yr.

I could be wrong, and I hope that I am... but it could be, at the very least an IP free party as well.... the thought of that is heartbreaking... lieterally. It's such a good time and a rare occasion to get the players out of "their element" to where they unwind, drink, & socialize. I've met so many great people at those parties it would be a shame to see them end... :(

Yeah, I agree...but I think they are having it...but sometimes when I think, bad things happen...so who knows....either way I doubt very seriously I will be able to grace the par-tay with my presence. I guess you could be stuck hanging with my old man...And if you get him dunk then YOU have to deal with it. LMAO.

Let me guess... you THOUGHT about being a SKINNY preggo girl & now you're a semi chunky preggo girl.... :D

landshark77 said:
Nope...I am still skinny. Or so people tell me... :D :D
I've said it before, and I'll say it again (cause I know that YOU know that I only mean it in a round about "i'm fat" kinda way) BITCH!

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT... Funny, yet true, kinda sad story.... we got this chick at work who is TOO skinny. She gets preggo (her 2nd!!!) and she comes back to work as skinny as freaking ever! Ok, so the other day she emails me & asks what size pants I wear. I told her it didn't really matter cause NO ONE in her family was my size, & no matter HOW BIG she was during her BIGGEST moments of pregnancy, was her clothes going to fit ME. She proceeds to tell me about these jeans she has that she thinks will fit me... they're 4 SIZES too small. THEN she asks if I want to use them as a goal? :D :D :D I explained to her that I have jeans ranging from her size to my size that I use as a goal... damn goal ain't gettin me nowhere so long as I continue to drink beer & eat pizza....
