Willard nickel shaper and light scuffing for best chalk adhesion

I recently purchased a Viking B2001 cue
with the standard v-pro shaft and Lepro medium tip. I called Viking to see what size tip shaper I needed and they told me the tips are shaped from the factory with a nickel radius. I also own a Willard nickel shaper and would like to know if I can lightly scuff the tip for chalk adhesion without shaping it further since it doesn’t need to be shaped apparently. Can I accomplish this with the pro nickel Willard shaping tool? Thanks you for sharing any wisdom ok

is this the same viking cue as mentioned in the other thread you started on the exact same topic?

What you have is a SHAPER. Not really meant as a scuffer. Just get some sandpaper and slightly rough it every now and then. Or spend 35bux and get a Kamui scuffer. I found a cheap vrsion of one on ebay for around 12bux. works perfect. https://www.walmart.com/ip/CANKER-B...7?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=101112853

So just scuff the flat part of the tip with 220 grit sandpaper and don’t worry about shaping it because it’s a nickel radius according to my Willard pro shaper gauge? I don’t want to remove any material from the tip is I don’t have to ok. Thanks

your tip has a flat part?

Making this harder than it needs to be. Ok, when you use the willards it will shape and lightly texture the tip. If it starts to get slick or you miscue use either sandpaper or a scuffer to LIGHTLY scuff the tip. You just want enough text. to hold chalk not fluff it up.

I use the plain black version of this thing.

Just roll the flat side on the tip while rotating the shaft. I start on the edge and work in toward the center. It seems to separate the leather without cutting it. Careful at edge of the tip. You can weaken the sides. Other than that it's pretty simple to get the tip evenly roughened.

IN MY OPINION, the best way to scuff your tip for better chalk adhesion is to use a scuffer with a rough surface that you press into the tip. Any other type that requires you to "sand" the tip will cause the tip to wear prematurely.
Some types that come to mind are:

Last 4 Ever: https://www.seyberts.com/last-4-ever-tip-tool-dime https://www.seyberts.com/last-4-ever-tip-tool-nickle
Brad Tip Scuffer: https://www.seyberts.com/pool-cue-tip-tools/brad-tip-scuffer/

Mezz tip tool: http://mezzcue.com/en/products_pool/accessories/maintenance/tiptool/cmt-k

My personal preference for scuffing and maintaining my tips is the Last 4 Ever tool (dime shape).

I use a Kamui knock-off that works perfect. Just roll the tip across it at an angle and you're done. I've never liked the Brad because its way too gritty imo. Real easy to fluff up the leather. The Last4Ever is a nice tool.

I bought some 220 grit sandpaper for 2.50 at Walmart. Hope lightly scuffing occasionally with that will improve chalk adhesion while not reducing tip longevity?

Thanks. There’s no cue maintenance/repair shops near me and I’d like this tip to last a long time while maintaining good playability. If chalk is all it takes that is awesome. Thanks

To rough up the tip, I usually use the Brad scuffer. I simply roll the scuffer around the tip—no brushing motion as it will wear down the tip.

The Tip Pik is also good. https://www.pooldawg.com/tip-pik-tip-tool

For shaping the tip, I use the Last 4 Ever tool and the Willard scuffer. I use the L4E tool to do most of the shaping, but it is not good for finishing the tip. The reason is that the sandpaper (or whatever it is) is not glued on properly and does not give me a proper dime shape. You can see this defect in the picture from the link.

If you like a nickel tip shape, the best tool is the plastic shaper that you slide sandpaper into. I use it for my break cue. It is less than $2 and easily fits in my case. If they made it in a dime shape, I would buy it in a heartbeat. https://www.pooldawg.com/4-inch-tip-sander

Thanks. I own a Willard’s pro tip nickel shaper and bought a last4ever nickel tool for scuffing. I think I’m good to go now concerning proper tip maintenance for longevity and performance. Now I need to get to the pool hall and practice running racks. I’ve already learned a lot from all of you. Thanks for the words of wisdom. I’m sure my next purchase will be a glove so I can ditch the chalk and not piss off the billiards hall owners
