Im looking to buy one or the other to start replacing tip for others and myself.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these Tip tools. Could you tell me which you prefer, and any likes or dis-likes about what you used.

I used the porper big shaver for a few years to replace tips. It worked well as long as you kept the blade sharp, its really works like a pencil sharpener for pool tips, plus it was small enough to carry in my cue case, I still carry it there to day more for burnishing than anything.

Can’t say anything from personal experience about the Willard Tipping Machine, but I have an “old style” Porper Big Shaver. Imho it is a nice and handy tool for cutting the tip flush with the ferrule. But you need to take care not to scratch the ferrule. Best thing is to exercise the cutting process on scrap shafts before going on your or others cues.

But as I said: It is an “old style” Big Shaver. The newer ones look slightly different with their black plastic caps sticking out on each site. Maybe Porper has improved the design for better handling.

Kind regards.

My 2 Cents..

for what its worth I have only had experience with the Big Shaver. (I still use it) but I do feel like I need to supplement it with other tools. If the Williard is an option for you I would go with that.

If you choose the big shaver here are a few helpful items to consider along side:

- buy extra blades (2-3) & re-sharpen them as needed)
- Masking tape for ferrule/shaft (or the cone shaped tension-er, may cause "grove/dents" if over tightened. (Trying to get a closer shave)
- Tweeten sander.(not all house cues ferrules are flat, they may need a little work, don't get crazy and over do it.)
- Porper Mushroom Trimmer (or razor knife) - use first before big shaver to slim down any excess tip, so they fit inside easier.
- Large Bastard File - (side step the nickel shaper, it's so so).
- smooth piece of leather in addition to the cone shaped burnisher.
