Willie Mosconi Photo's - Cool Stuff !

I wonder what the SPF instructors would make of that stance and stroke.
 
I hadn't noticed that (good eyes!), but I think you're right. I wonder if Willie liked a rear-balanced cue? That would seem odd given his forward grip position...which already gives a more rearward "balance". Maybe he favored a thin wrap over any balance consequences.

I don't know about the cue, but I'm sure you could find pics where the butt has a normal looking taper. Maybe he was experimenting.

As for his forward grip position, he had a slip stroke - not a big one, but he did slip 2 or 3 inches. That is, as the cue started moving on the final backswing, his grip hand slipped back a few inches. Hard to achieve consistency with a slip stroke, but of course he achieved it. I'm guessing here, but he probably powdered his butt :o:o to help the slip.

If that taper isn't a photographic illusion, it's possible that he had it that way so that he didn't slip too much.
