Did you say you'll be working with Mark 22nd-25th? What time will you be there, what time do you finish each day? I'll stop by one of those days, maybe if you have time, you can stop by my place. I'm only 10 minutes from Mark. I'll show you my cue shop and everything else I've got.

Zim,
I would like to see your shop. I may, however, be bringing some family along who may take the car during the day (I may be marooned at Mark's without wheels - not sure yet). I'll be arriving late Friday afternoon. I think we start about 3 hours before opening, play til closing (but with lessons spaced throughout the day, time for practice and matching up in between). July 22, 23, 24. I think of the lessons as intensive care for a very sick patient. :) :)

Give me a call before you leave for IL! Since you guys are starting 3 hrs before opening, maybe I'll stop by at open or an hour after opening. This will give you a few hours of training and a well deserved break from it as well.

Hey Zim, I may come over as well. Perhaps we can arrange a mini meet 'n greet?

Sounds like a good idea. Zach, I hope you've been practicing. I'm in the early stages of planning a straight pool invitational for 4 or 6 prominent enthusiasts such as yourself in "Betmore's Basement" (my house) for early next year. Referee with tuxedo and white gloves, the winner to hopefully match up with a local pro that you've met. I keep trying to get Satman and Woody_968 to come over, but THEY'RE DUCKING ME. The basement pool room is really coming along (you wouldn't recognize it, lots of additions since you were here).

See you in St. Louis (I've always wanted to say that).

Unfortunately, I haven't played straight pool since we played that one game...lol. I'll definitely start practicing now though! I know I don't stand a chance, but I'd like to be at least semi-competitive.

It sounds like you're from IN also? It looks like I'll be at The Bullpen on Friday, 22nd in the afternoon. Sure, you can stop by also!

Nope, I'm in Columbia, Missouri. I am/was Rackin_Zack.

Zim,
I might not have been very clear - I'm leaving Indy around 11 or 12 on Friday; getting to Collinsville late afternoon, early evening. It is on Saturday and Sunday that we'll start in the morning (I've got to work Friday A.M. - wish I could get there earlier). I hope to be playing at the Bullpen by 4 or 5 P.M on Friday. Hope to see you soon.

My misunderstanding! Are you only there for the weekend then, or will you be there on Monday also? I can probably make it there Friday evening for a couple of hours. I'll get directions to my place and if you have time Saturday or Sunday, we'll make arrangements for you to stop by.

I'll try to see you there also.

Willie - I have been going over to Mark's quite a bit in the last week. It is only a few minutes from The Break. I got a little action and I was amazed at the conditions & cleanliness of the place. I played a fellow for over two hours and when I was finished, I didn’t even need to wash my hands. Mark & his Wife (Cathy) are a pleasure to be around. I guess you know even better than me about how Mark plays Straight Pool. I was telling him about the Straight Pool Shootout they are talking about this year at the DCC. I think he would be a good bet.
Look forward to meeting you - Tom

Williebetmore and Zeeder~
My apologies, but I will not be available Saturday and most likely not Sunday. I'm going to try to make it over there Friday evening! You guys are pretty close, you know how to get in touch with me if you ever want to stop by.

I agree with Tom, Mark does play some mean 14.1 and should give it a shot at DCC.

I lived in Indy in '96-97, and used to play a lot up by the NE mall. Do you know
Skeet Buscher?

Snapshot,
Yes, I've met Skeet (though I would have forgotten if he didn't have a somewhat unusual name). He helps Mike H. run the weekly 9-ball tournament at Chalkies (and usually doesn't compete, though I understand he is quite proficient). We had a long talk one day after I won the tournament - he is very knowledgeable and a great enthusiast and student of the game. He gave me lots of encouragement to continue the practice regimen I have been using. He was bemoaning the fact that so many players do not practice enough to really improve.

I haven't played in the tournament for almost a year, but I've improved enough that I would like to try my hand at a little 9-ball again. If I see Skeet, I'll tell him you remembered him.

It's posts like this that make me feel really guilty...lol. One of these days I'll learn that buying cues is no replacement for practice. The only problem is I spend all my money on cues and then don't have any left for table time. :P :D

Z-man,
Don't feel too bad, I've only been able to practice 2 or 3 hours a day on weekdays, sometimes a lot longer on weekends when I don't work. :) :)
If I didn't have this pesky day job, I would do more. My game has improved tremendously since we had pool school in March - I'm hoping Mark can help me continue the trend. Of course I still have only 1 crappy cue - hey, maybe I should quit practicing and just buy a better cue.

what kind of cue do you shoot with Mr. Betmore? i think you told me in Peoria last year that it was a Predator, just not for sure?

with all of your $$$, why dont you invest in a very nice custom and see if it does anything for your game.

and are you going over to see Mark Wilson again?

DCP,
Sneaky Pete style, plain Predator (shaft 1" longer than standard). I've played with a Southwest before this, I prefer the Predator. UNFORTUNATELY, I've had some shaft problems since I sent it back for a new ferrule - and I can't seem to get a shaft that is TOTALLY straight. I am considering a new cue - either a Bludworth (I played some with Danny D.'s Blud, and I liked it a lot), a Jimmy Sickles (would custom make it with a Predator shaft), or one of those cues that Mark Wilson uses that are designed and fitted ONLY FOR PLAYABILITY.

I personally don't think a new cue would help in any way - the best I could hope for is that a switch wouldn't mess me up too badly. I firmly believe (at least with my game) that my misses are not through bad aiming or fault of the cue - my misses are due to an imperfection in the stroke. At this point if I stroke properly I don't miss.

See you in Peoria.
