Thought it might be interesting to look at the winner's performance in the BCAPL National 8 ball Championship Super Senior division over the past 6 years:

In 2009 (152 participants) Jim Henry (9-0) won with 4 Hill/Hill matches, had 1 shut out & lost 25 total games.

In 2010 (165 participants) Bob Oliver (8-0) won with 0 Hill/Hill matches, had 5 (5-1 wins) & lost only 13 total games...Wow!!

In 2011 (189 participants) Bob Green (9-0) won with 2 Hill/Hill matches, had 2 shut outs & lost 16 total games.

In 2012 (204 participants) David Dattillo (10-1) won with 3 Hill/Hill matches, 3 shut outs & lost 22 total games.

In 2013 (207 participants) Don Owen (10-0) won with 2 Hill/Hill matches, 1 shut out, 4 (5-1) matches & lost 20 total games..

In 2014 (178 participants) Mike Massey (9-0) won with 3 Hill/Hill matches, no shut outs, 1 (5-1) match & lost 25 total games.

Only 1 winner came from the loser side (Dattilo). The last match of each year has always gone Hill/Hill, except for 2010 (Owen won 5-3)

Sorry, I had too much time on my hands this PM, but the comparisons are informative.

Nice post. I see these stats and conclude that Mike Massey should not be barred from the event.

Yes, Mike's performance was not overwhelming in comparison to the other winners,,,,,My worry is that if you open the barn door for all age qualified pros & grand masters with equal or possibly better skills to enter the Super Senior competition, then I think it is quite likely that cream will rise to the top & skilled amateurs will no longer be competitive in this group of advanced pool players.

What is the goal for BCA with respect to the Super Senior competition? Providing a tournament for highly skilled amateurs or providing a tournament for older professionals?
I feel that the best competitions are usually conducted among your respective pier group.

Super Seniors

Participating in this tournament has been one of the highlights in my life during the last few years. When I found out Mike was in the tournament this year I was hoping I would get to play him. However, I didn't play well enough to have that opportunity.

I'm not sure what is best for the tournament but I plan to continue entering as long as I have my health, regardless.

Mark and Ozzy, keep up the good work.

Don
