Wood to Wood Joint/Shaft Inserts

Can anybody compare the hit and feel of wood to wood joints with the brass insert in the shaft and those with no insert but threaded wood in the shaft?

I've never hit one with the wood threads in the shaft and would be interested to know if the feel is any or much different from the w2w with the shaft insert.

Who makes cues with this type of joint?

I know Kilby and Helmstetter have an all wood joint primarily for carom cues.

I have a Fury RP cue with a wood to wood connection, and a radial pin that screws directly into the threaded wood of the shaft. I'm not sure I can describe the actual difference in feel, but it seems to have a softer, hit and the feels more like a one piece cue than the ones with a metal insert. That probably isn't much help, and I would suggest trying to find someone who has one and seeing if you can try it. I have let many people try my cue, and most all of them could feel the difference far better than anyone could describe it.

The difference is two part. First when the w2w joint has no brass in the shaft, then the pin is much bigger as in 3/8-10, Radial, etc. The bigger pin stiffens up the hit by itself. Wood threaded shafts in my opinion have a greater degree of feel allowed. The big pin makes for a stiff playing cue but the actual "hit" is felt as "softer" than a steel joint cue or a cue with a brass insert. To me, cues with a steel joint or brass inserts in the shaft have kind of a "ping" in the hit and feel much harsher. A good comparison is old fishing poles. Some old 2 pc poles had a metal joint connecting the two halves together...these did not provide the best feel and you may get your worm stolen. With a nice 1pc pole then you could actually feel every bump and twitch...much better. Many, many top makers prefer to make their cues with big pins & wood threaded shafts...such as Southwest, Joe Gold, Josey, just to name a few. I must also confess that a shaft can be fitted with a phenolic or plastic insert and they will still feel & play exactly like a woodthreaded shaft. That being said...there are many top players who play world class with a steel joint/brass insert cue...so its indeed a personal choice. I just happen to be one who chooses to make my cue with a 3/8-10 pin and phenolic inserts in my own personal playing cue.
