Can someone tell me what wood is used for the shaft of a snooker cue?
My philosophy has always been if it works for snooker players it will certainly work for pool. Does anyone have a pool stick with this type of wood? What kind of hit does it deliver?
I have been thinking of having a 2nd shaft made up for my playing cue with this type of wood.
thx

Either Ash or Maple is used for snooker cues, but Ash is the most regularly used wood for snooker cues, at least in the UK anyways :)

Ash is a very solid type wood and there isn't that much flex in a ash shaft, than there is in a maple shaft, but then again, the kind of taper used in snooker cues is a big factor in this, but there is still a reasonable amount of deflection :)

I have a 3/4 butt jointed snooker cue with an Ash shaft and it hits pretty nicely and it only cost me 40 GBP with aluminum case and 2 threaded extensions, which is a pretty dang good deal in the UK :)

There are some snooker players that have had a custom American Pool cue made with an Ash shaft and 13mm ferrule and tip and 3/4 butt jointed like a snooker cue, as they find it easier to adapt with, than switching to a standard 2pce maple pool cue with a 13mm tip :)

i know dufferin has pool cues with ash shafts, but i think for pool maple works best.

The majority of snooker players that have turned to the American Pool game have in fact either stuck with their standard 10mm snooker cue (like Mark Gray - European number 1) or they have had a custom made snooker cue made - out of maple not ash, this tends to have a similar taper to a snooker cue but with a slightly smaller ferrule size to a pool cue.

Players playing with this equipment include Tony Drago and Steve Davis - both of which had their cues made by John Parris.

I am not sure what impact having a 13mm ash shaft would have on the hit, but on a snooker cue ash is a very stiff hit and players have to compensate for throw when playing with side, this is why the likes of Drago will probably never player with a Predator or equivalent shaft as they already make the adjustment.
