Word to the Wise: Traveling w/Laptop Computer

This just in...

Last time, I spoke to Detective Carey of the Colonie Police Department, the investigation was in progress. He spoke to the ONLY two other persons who entered my room at the Courtyard Marriott in Albany, New York, when my computer was stolen: a housekeeper and a maintenance man.

I began to write some letters to the Marriott Headquarters here in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as another corporate office of Bill Marriott located in Omaha, Nebraska. I was in the process of writing a letter to the editor of the Times Union, the main Albany newspaper, about my "Nightmare on Wolf Street." Great letter, too, by the way. I spent many hours creating it.

I was wronged, and the Innkeeper's Statute was thrown in my face by a Marriott employee sometime ago, stating they would not refund me for my loss. However, today I am happy to report that Marriott has had a change of heart. I have been requested to fax the receipt of my computer, and a check for its full cost will be forthcoming.

I'd rather have my laptop back, being I had it set up the way I like it, but the 600 bucks will help to mend my broken heart! :D

JAM,

I am glad that they are at least going to take care of the financial aspect.

It is also great that you took the time to post the outcome (at least what appears to be the outcome). We seem to always hear about the negative aspects only. Thanks.

Good Luck to you and Keith!

p.s. It was great seeing you both in Hagerstown. Hope to see you again soon.

And you did not introduce yourself because?????
LS,

I did not know you were there on Sunday. From your post I will assume you were. Sorry I did not see you but I would not have know how to identify you. CaptJR, JAM, and Keith were easy (pictures).

My wife and I had a great time while we were there but being non-smokers (for the most part), we had enough smoke by about 6:00 and left for the day. Hagerstown is a nice town with lots of fun things to do but we just headed back home.

We are some of those folks who just show up to watch and enjoy the game. I do not get too caught up on who is playing who (usually) but enjoy good pool.

The Captain and I played for almost two hours before he wanted to get back to sweating the matches. I think he got tired of kicking my ___. Hey, I tried and had a good time.

It would have been cool to have met others from the forum and I am sorry it did not work out that way. Fill me in and I will be happy to introduce myself at a future event.

Jam if you had a card to get into the door looked like a credit card don't even waste your time.I used to clean out and clean up motels for a living. Those teson and scancard locks are false.I can tell you what the end result will be.One of these 3 things
1.A housekeeper acidently lost her card
2.The owner kept the incorrect date and time in the reader
3.Your duplicate card (you never got) when you checked in was used.
Trust me I know the motel/hotel business. We would need to move in and stay for 3 months to get the trash to move out .1st thing we did when we cleaned out a motel(mostly 300plus units)was stay incogneto and see what staff was bad. Most the time there was maybe 2 or 3 out of 30 people who where really honest. The rest I sent out in black and whites or fired.I owned a company that when people owned and mostly purchased a rundown or problem motel would come in-clean it out-fix it up and reastablish a real visitor customer base.We took 1.5 million dollar a year places and made them into a 12 million dollar a year establishments.Trust me I know jam the thing was taken by staff and they knew what they were doing. The cops will close the investigation unsolved!I would be concerned what is on the laptop that was personal though. You see the transiants of today are more smarter then of the past.Your laptop in most likely in capible hands. It most likely was traded for Rock and worked its way up the ladder to someone who purchased it for the laptop and what information it contained.I am not trying to spook you but they will be patient and wait till they have a snap all at 1 time.If you did online banking they will wait till you have alot of funds(say tax time) in your accounts. If you think this cannot be done and anyone here say's it cannot be done, you should see the staff member I had to track what has been going on in the motels computers. He could hack anything in 10 mins or less.I would make sure you change all your info that is at risk and especially personal passcodes. Also check your TRW and make sure there is NOT another JAN walking around the USA.Here is what I would suggest when you take these trips.Find out what rooms are NEXT to the office and reserve those rooms at any given motel/hotel.Usually the Sheritans-and the Marriots have security cameras here on the east coast.Yes your paying $50 more a night but the security is worth it.There is 1 great thing that did not happen to you! I see the cues are still laying beside the dresser:) .

That is very useful info, and I appreciate you posting it for me and others who travel. :)

I never used my laptop for banking or financial matters, and I did have everything backed up, thankfully.

If I do purchase a new laptop, I will NEVER leave it in a hotel again. I learned a lesson, and I hope others have gained knowledge from my misfortune. :)
