World Cup of Pool (22-27Sep2015)- Taiwan & USA tipped as top favorites to win

I found it quite funny that 2 guys who basicly didn't like each other till just recently were made one of the favorits

And there was the upset, USA. Bit sad, two scratches is what did them in one by each of them.

Well USA and couple other teams badly needed itch ointment for sure

USA TUMBLES OUT AS HOLLAND AND PHILIPPINES MARCH ON
Round 1 Scores

Qatar 7-5 USA (6)
Holland (3) 7-3 India
Philippines (2) 7-4 Russia

THERE was another big upset as day two of the Dafabet World Cup of Pool played out at the York Hall, London on Wednesday evening. This time it was the USA who crumbled, going down to Qatar who looked the part and definitely played it. In the other matches Holland had a comfortable win against India after getting off to a great start and the Philippines steamrollered Russia after losing the early exchanges.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

In the opening game Team USA (Mike Dechaine and Shane Van Boening) were left shell-shocked as they fell at the first hurdle to a lively Qatari team in front of a large noisy crowd. The score was 7-5 but there was no doubting the superior team on the day.

The Qatar team of Waleed Majid and Bashar Hussain played two superb racks to take the early lead at 2-0 and settle any nerves. The USA came back into it but trailing 2-3 Dechaine scratched while potting the 7 ball. That made it 4-2 to Qatar before the USA took the next to stay on their heels.

Qatar moved that to 5-3 with a 7/9 combo, before America won the 9th and then broke and ran to level it at 5-5. They couldn’t press home the advantage though and an outstanding 3/8/9 combo from Bashar Hussain put Qatar on the hill.

The axe fell in rack 12 when Van Boening caught an attempted safety on the 1 ball too thick and scratched. Qatar nearly made a mess of it with ball in hand but Waleed saved it with a nerveless bank on the 8 ball to set up the win.

Commented jubilant Waleed; “I am very excited to have beaten America. We didn’t just play for Qatar, we played for all Arab countries. Our federation has supported Qatari players well and we hope we can repeat this performance in the next match.

“Of course, in 9-ball anything can happen. It doesn’t matter who is the best player, if you play well you can win the match. The key moment was probably when Mike scratched on the 7-ball and we went 4-2 up, when they could have been 3-3 with the break,” he added.

Two-time runners up Holland are on track to improve upon that situation as they beat a well-supported Indian team 7-3. Raj Hundal and Amar Kang were lead in by a thundering set of drummers as they looked to get off to a good start.

However, the Dutch duo of Nick van den Berg and Niels Feijen had different ideas as they raced into a 4-0 lead to silence the crowd as they contained India to just one shot. Feijen though scratched in the next and India got on the scoreboard. They took the next and then broke and ran the seventh to get right back in the game at 4-3.

India played safe on the two ball in the next but it was a poor leave as Holland took full advantage to take a two rack lead at 5-3. Looking comfortable now, the Dutch finished off the match to set up a second round match against Japan.

In the final match of the evening the Filipino pair of Carlo Biado and Warren Kiamco looked all business as they overcame a 2-0 deficit to best the Russian duo of Ruslan Chinakhov and Konstantin Stepanov by a 7-4 margin.

Both Philippines players were making their debut in the competition but there were enough Pinoys in the crowd to make them feel at home. After the early stutter they won six racks in a row to set up a commanding lead and although Russia rallied to win the ninth and tenth racks, the Filipinos got back in to take the match.

Commented Kiamco, “We were under pressure because this is anybody’s game so we needed to fight the pressure. Philippines has a very good history at the World Cup of Pool and for us this is our first time as a pair to be picked to play here and we are doing our best to win it again for Philippines.

“The crowd adds some more pressure but we like that and it is great to see their support. There are a lot of Filipinos here in London so it is great to see the support. The Philippines have done so well in the World Cup before so we are pleased to be through and are aiming to go all the way.”

Why are HOLLAND & JAPAN playing today?

Hmmm, but why are Holland & Japan playing when they just played yesterday and not getting 1 day rest?

Austria v France or Indonesia v Romania should play instead of last year's finalist Holland and Japan since Austria ,France, Indonesia ,Romania did not play yesterday

Must be some bad programming by organizer:)

This isn't tennis lol :D

Yes sure it is not as physical but the pressure and stress can be draining especially since it is Round 2 against another seed. No reason to put Holland Japan up first since there are 2 other matches comprising 4 teams who already had 1 day rest and did not play yesterday :D

ENGLAND A THROUGH AS JAPAN OUST HOLLAND
Round 1 Score
England B (15) 7-4 Sweden

Round 2 Scores
Japan (14) 7-6 Holland (3)
England A (1) 7-0 Korea (16)

ENGLAND A AND JAPAN became the first two teams through to the quarter finals of the 2015 Dafabet World Cup of Pool as they enjoyed contrasting victories against Korea and Holland respectively. England A, closing the evening, trounced Korea in the only white-wash of the event so far while Japan won a fabulous hill-hill battle against the Dutch.

England can look forward to Romania or Indonesia in Saturday’s quarter finals while Japan face either Qatar or the Czech Republic. In the other match of the evening England B completed the first round of matches with a 7-4 win over Sweden.

Taking place at the York Hall in London, the Dafabet World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the globe competing for a $250,000 prize fund. Televised live in over 40 countries around the world, the event is now entering its tenth year.

Holland won’t be repeating their recent runs to the semi-finals of the World Cup of Pool as they lost a thrilling round two match, 7-6 to Japan. The Japanese team consisting of the flamboyant joker Naoyuki Oi and the more restrained Toru Kurabayashi seemed to enjoy every minute of it as they held off the highly fancied Niels Feijen and Nick van den Berg to squeeze out the win.

Japan lead 3-1, 5-3 and then 6-4 before Holland squared it up with Feijen breaking for the match. A loose break though saw the cue ball squirt into the centre pocket to give ball in hand to the Japanese.

With a 7/9 combo set perfectly, they worked their way through the balls until Kurabayashi came to the game ball. ‘9 ball! Can’t miss!’ shouted Oi which heaped the pressure on his partner but he steadied himself to seal a superb win.

Oi was delighted to reach his country’s third quarter-final in the ten years of the World Cup; “We are thrilled to get through! Holland is one of the best teams here and they gave us a very tough game but we came through.

“We like to have fun and make the crowd have fun and it is great to play to this audience. We want to carry on playing in this way and we believe we can win this World Cup.

“When I set up the 7/9, I knew Toru would not miss it and he didn’t. There were some big moments in that match but we took our chance when it came at hill-hill,” he added.

Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton charged through unchallenged as they battered Korea 7-0, finding form at the right time following an indifferent showing at the World 9 Ball Championship recently in Qatar.

Appleton said, “I never thought it would be that easy but they had a nightmare to be fair. They never played their game but we broke well and we’re happy to win. It was easy in the end but we really expected a tough game but that’s 9 ball.

“We feel at home here – this is the second best event after the Mosconi Cup and it’s one of the two or three events that you really want to win. It’s a short race that suits people who can play under pressure and we are the team to be feared!”

Boyes added, “I never doubted our doubles play but eight weeks ago Darren had some trouble with his neck and then mine went four weeks ago. I’ve not had much practice but in the arena and on live TV all form goes out the window. On paper we were looking at Germany or China but it’s Indonesia or Romania. They’ve both done well so far so that so that should be a good match tomorrow.”

In the final first round match, the England B side of Mark Gray and Daryl Peach overcame a stuttering start to defeat Sweden to earn the dubious pleasure of a second round match against the Philippines on Friday night. It is only the second time Peach and Gray have been paired together in the ten year history of the event and the last time in 2008, they reached the final only to lose to the USA pair of Morris and Van Boening.

The Swedish team of veteran Marcus Chamat and youngster Christian Sparrenloev Fischer had the better of the early exchanges to move into a 3-1 lead but England got on a roll to rattle off the next three to take a 4-3 lead which they maintained to run out 7-4 winners.

Gray said, “It is hard waiting while everybody else has played their first-round matches. We have been waiting a few days so it is good to get the win in tonight.

“The Philippines are No.2 seeds and as soon as you mention them you don’t really need to say much more. This year Biado and Kiamco look like a proper team whereas sometimes Philippines turn up and look like individuals. We watched them last night and we were very impressed. It was probably one of the best performances in round one and we know we have a tough game; we will have to improve.

Peach added, “It was a tough match, we knew we had a tough match with Sweden because they are fighters. We had to dig in deep and it was by no means the best we have ever played, we were probably only at about 30 percent but we held it together at the end and potted balls when it counted.

“Myself and Mark finished second the only time we have ever played in the World Cup together. We have the ball rolling now, we have Philippines next up who are as tough as it gets but they know they are up against it as well.”

Quarterinals

Bookmaker William Hill now have England A as slight favorite over Taiwan to win whole thing. England A are defending champs and whitewashed Korea 7-0. No defending champ has ever defended title
Taiwan is sentimental favorite been in 4 consecutive semis but never won it. Ko is breaking well and if Chang gets his break together , they will win whole thing
Finland as usual playing great team pool and is the team to beat
Austria is breaking well with great team dynamics and is hungry
Japan is most entertaining team and will be a crowd favorite and a dark horse to win
Qatar is dark horse and proving to be one of better team combos so far

IMHO, it is looking like Taiwan v Finland final :D

Where do they get these announcers? Ted is annoying :frown:

Ted Lerner is fine. He is not technical commentator like Jim Wych but he sure knows players , pool development, industry news
Have pro pool player doing commentary was great - they hope they do it for every match and not just English players :grin-square:
