Why is it that they constantly mention the 4" corner pockets but never mention the side pocket size?

I emailed matchroom to ask about details on the the pocket sizes and angle but I doubt I will get a response.

Probably because they are trying to promote pool to a UK / European audience and 4" makes it sound tougher. Constantly explaining that the middle pockets are 0.5" larger (or whatever) probably doesn't really matter to 99% of tv viewers!

Agreed on the reason it's not mentioned. As you have noted, side pockets are customarily 1/2" bigger than the corners. I don't recall ever hearing a commentator mention the side pocket specs during a pool tournament.

As already mentioned, people rarely mention side pockets when discussing the tables difficulty. But they mention it often likely since we aren’t accustomed to watching tournaments on 4” pockets and they are probably trying to educate the viewer on why players might be missing a few more pots than they are accustomed to seeing.

Are you sure they are only .5" larger as there has been talk that side pockets should never be smaller than 4.75"

My notes from last year's WPM event indicate that viewers were told that the corners were 4" and the sides 5". I've heard nothing about the sides this year.

I would bet that the OP is right. The 1/2” rule seems to be going away as the corners keep shrinking. Corners seem to have no limit as far as playability goes, another words you can pocket balls at all angles with tight corners, but with side pockets anything much smaller than 4.75 and you almost have to be straight on.

I dont think they should ever be less than 4.75" because it does in fact change the availability of side pocket shots. Tightening the corners does not change the pockets availability for shots. Just my $0.02. :)

Hanging in there, fella. Will you be in London for any of the UK Open?

PS We both prefer a purple four, but I'm over it at this point.
No, I was just in London for 3 days. Had a wonderful time. Next trip will be in late June most likely. Possibly sooner if I have one deal close.

I mentioned it in another thread, the older I get the more I enjoy London.

I’m probably going to pop up at the Mcup this year. And 1000% derby.

Just approximately, no idea in reality, I just meant that its not relevant to the vast majority of fans that the centre pockets are 0.x inches larger than the corner ones. That kind of stuff only matters to a tiny, tiny percentage of hardcore aficionados.
