I have seen several threads in the last few days complaining about how poor Pool Players are compensated compared to other Professional Athletes, (for those in Rio Linda California that is Paid).

I really think one of the existing Pool Associations like BCA, or ACS, or maybe some New Organization is need to give Pool a face life, image make over, and market Pool, and it 40,000,000 Pool Players to Corporate USA. (40,000,00 is a number I read years ago, about the number of American that play Pool at least once annually) I also know BCA has about 60,000 Players participating in BCA Leagues Annually.

Also I see no reason why this new Player friendly Organization could not attract the like of Beer, Alcohol, The Auto & Light Truck Industry, Candy Companies, Snack Food Companies, Prescription Drug Companies, Soft Drink Companies, Credit Card Companies, Tobacco Companies, Cigarette Companies, etc. like NASCAR has done. To be Official sponsor of Pool.

As we as Pool Player buy, and use their products. Plus I am sure companies like Pool Dawgs, Muellers, OZone Billiards, and other in the Pool Industry would be eager to jump on board.

So my next question would be. If such an organization existed today, would you join a existing organization, or new organization, and PAY them $25.00-$30.00 for an Annual Membership that would include a Monthly, or Bi Monthly New Stand Quality Magazine like Billiards Digest, or Inside Pool as part of your annual membership?

Also as part of the annual membership fee, discount programs could be developed, and I am sure tournament prize moneys would follow.

So the question is if there was such a Pool Organization would you personally be willing to spend $25.00-$30.00 for an Annual membership if it meant in the long run potentially more money in your pocket when you won a tournament, or a discount program that was beneficial to you, and a nice News Stand Quality Magazine?

No I did not, have you got any better ideas?

If so please state them. My ears are open, and so are my eyes. ;)

This pole is stupid.

Many of us already spend way more than $25-$30 per year to support pool.

Personally, I subscribe to several pool magazines, I attend many tournaments each year as a spectator, I belong to a national league and I buy many products from a number of sources. I would have to say, my yearly contribution to the pool industry is in the thousands of dollars and I don't think I'm alone.

If you only contribute $25-$30 per year, you have a lot of catching up to do. If you are including a monthly magazine with the membership to any organization, there won't be a lot of money left over for any prize money.

True

That is good

The $25-$30 per year would be a Membership Fee in a Organization, or New Organization, that maybe would work on Corporate America to support and do more sponsorship for Pool. Both Amateur, and at the Pro level.

Already do that

Every tour in my area has a yearly dues associated with it that gets you nothing but the right to play in the tournaments that year.
Since each one averages $30, and I currently am a member of 2 tours, I'm already donating $60.00 to pool each year.

Yes I agree...you are not alone. Most of us are in leagues and pay $20 per year membership, I myself am in 3 different ones. They should seriously look at the state of pool and do something about the way it's perceived. The have the ability to draw better sponsors but have not figured out how or how to market it better. I have to wonder if the only thing these leagues have figured out is how to make money off the players and don't bother to work at anything else. The truth is the BCA,APA and others are purely money making businesses. The only reason they promote pool is to draw in more players. Our local APA league director is a joke and has driven more players away than you can shake a stick at. If the heads of those leagues would look at this as a potential way to expand the publics awareness or improve the opinion of pool and using that as a way to draw in more people then this whole debate would go away. Unfortunately, it seems the goal is only to attract more players to those leagues. Just what i think though.

Pool Fanatics that post on AZBilliards are not the ones you need to poll.
Bangers that knock them around and cannot make 2 balls in a row are the ones that make up most of the 40,000,000 exaggerated number. Most of them will NOT contribute that money. I go bowling once a year. Doesnt mean I want to pay an additional $30 to get a magazine. Same with rock climbing, jet skiing, and all my other occasional hobbies. I think the 40M people playing pool is off. That is just having a good time. Not playing pool. The SPORT of pool needs to concentrate on the more regular players to the serious players to the pros. If that is 10 Million people playing (more realistic number) then that is a number that might pay the $25/30 additional fee to the hundreds of dollars they already spend. Not having a national organization that truly understands the economics of pool and the mentality of our sport is what hurts the most I think.

I invest over $1000 dollars a year in pool maybe more

cues
table time
tips
cases
chalk

and on and on

The Pool results tell the story real well. Too bad the consumer products/service companies that pool player support, do not support pool.

As a pool fan and decent amateur player I would be happy to see $1 per month from my league dues going to directly fund the administration of professional pool. As a member of 3 leagues I would not miss that $36 a month at all.

I believe that IF American professional pool had the support of the amateur leagues in this fashion that Amercian professinal pool would have the organization it needs to become a steady and major television sport which in turn grows the amateur league player base and grows the number of casual participants who purchase pool time and billiard products.

And American professionals would have a reason to excel again and would rightfully earn their place among the world's elite and would win back the respect of the world as to the talent depth in the USA.

APA, BCA, and VNEA, TAP, ACS, are you listening?

You would be lucky if the $25-$30 per year covered the cost of producing the "news stand quality magazine" that you mentioned in your original post. There wouldn't be anything left for any sponsorship.

The 40,000,000 number is a false number. The NSGA (National Sporting Goods Association) says it's about 34,000,000 & that number represents the WORLD Pool Playing population. The amount of play ranges from 1 time a week to Pro level.

You have to ask yourself why the PROS can't make a living. I don't look at the majority of great players as professionals. They may eke out a living, doing nothing but playing Pool, however professionals of other endeavors don't get up in the morning, looking for a score. JMHO

I would laud the day when these fine players do become professionals & their names are on a billboard some day. I will see them dressed very nice but casual, they will talk as if someone's granny was present & they will represent several companies. They will be a paid House pro somewhere & give lessons as a daily routine. When they perform in a tournament, there will be an admission charge to watch them do their stuff. The newspapers will write about their performances & their names will be spoken in the schools of every country on this planet.

The American Players will all belong to one association & that association will be run parallel with the BCA (or whatever the BCA turns into, because it's not the organization it was supposed to be or once was). The idea is that one organization writes the rules for Pros & the Amateurs have a separate organization, but the rules are parallel. There will obviously be some exceptions, but not many. Each continent will have it's own organization. There is a WPC in place to govern world competitions.

If you want to see that day, please realize that you will have to spend some money. A national organization, that is spoken about in this thread, will call on all the companies involved, from Frito~Lay to Brunswick. They will call on the newspaper syndicates too. A national tour will be established, a governing body will promote & control endorsements & sponsorships. Exhibitions will be scheduled, the media will show (TV & Syndicated Newspapers) up & we will all enjoy the show.

This may be a dream, but dreams do come true. Somebody got tired of walking great distances & invented a car. That miracle took a long time to come about.
