Actually the WOW Index is only meant to serve as an easy way, for users to find past WOWs. There is Janka hardness, that I have mentioned before, but I only claimed that it gives an indication of the wood's ability to resist denting. Now harmonics, on the other hand, greatly effect a cues hit. I wish we had a good luthier to give input in this area.

Thank You

Tracy, Thank You for this index as I missed a few of the WOW and think these are the best threads ever on AZ. Thanks again

I am glad you enjoy them. I think, the cuemakers that set me straight, when I get things wrong, are far more deserving of your gratitude. I am very grateful to them.

Perhaps Mike could make this a sticky post in this forum?!
I plan to edit the original post in this thread every time a new WOW is posted. You should be able to find the index, at least on the first page. If this section starts getting a lot more posts, then it might be a good idea.

Keep in mind that editing a post doesn't bring it to the top, only new posts do. You'll have to edit the post and then do a bump post! :D

By popular demand, WOW Season 2, is premiering today. Look for WOW #14, soon. Anyone who has anything to add, or photos to share, please do not hesitate, to do so.

Tracy,
Thanks for taking the time to complie the WOW index. I have found a great resource for deciding which woods to use in cue construction.

While I am not a luthier, I was a major acoustic guitar buff. From a harmonics stand-point, rosewood is highly desired in your high-end guitars. It has a crisp, true harmonic. Mahoganys and the saeple varieties thereof are also used when a smokier, bluesy sound is desired. I would say that the maples and koa fall somewhere between the two. Black walnut is also a desired tonewood. With the advent of the depletion of the brazilian rosewoods; cocbolo is now being used as a tonewood. I have not had the pleasure to play one yet, but may head down to the guitar shop and see if they have one in stock.
You will find that almost always exclusively the tops of guitars will be constructed of, in desired order: Sitka Spruce, Mahogany, Cedar, Maple. Because of the bracing used in guitar tops, and the vibration characteristics of these woods; makes them the preferred tonewood for tops.

Hope this all made sense!
Lisa

I enjoy this thread ...

This is a good thread, and very enjoyable to learn about
the different types of hardwoods.

Just an update for the links so that they work with the newer forum address. Let me know if any do not work for you. Wouldn't mind these posts coming back, very informative.

Thanks for fixing the links. I did not even know they had died. Doing these threads was fun, but I just got burned out with it. If anyone would like to take up where I left off, let me know. I will keep the index updated as the new entries are posted.

Tracy,

The links didn't actually die, the actual address for the forums changed. It went from http://www.azbilliards.com/vbulletin/upload/ to http://forums.azbilliards.com . So the links to the specific threads no longer worked. It is great info, and personally, I would like for it to be made a sticky as you put in a great deal of work, and I loved Pernrose's additions as it seems like he has quite a bit of wood knowledge. I wouldn't mind spending some serious time with him, just to learn a fraction of what he has bouncing around up there. But that only comes with time, so I have quite a bit of time to go. Thanks you for your efforts.
