WPBA at the Derby City Classic

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!

I heard a rumor the other day that Jeanette Lee would not be playing at the DCC this year because the WPBA banned their membership from playing in this event! I looked at the WPBA website for any announcements and could find nothing in the public sections. I also sent them an email through their website asking for confirmation of this, but they don't seem to want to discuss it, as they did not return my emails. Has anyone else heard anything about this ban and the rationale behind it? Jeanette had a good showing in Louisville last year and got quite a bit of what I thought was great publicity for the sport! I hope this rumor is unfounded, because I feel that everyone gains from the good exposure!

Well, I could see a number of reasons why the WPBA would frown upon their members (especially Jeanette) playing in the Derby City Classic. For starters, the WPBA holds a no-gambling policy for all of its players during the duration of a tournament (I think even a day or two before and after as well). The DCC is a direct contradiction of this policy. Secondly, the WPBA wants to maintain a bit of control over its product. If its most recognized player were to start playing in other events, what would be the value of a WPBA event then? The WPBA has a product because they have control and it's tough decisions like these that make it successful.

Personally, I'd love to see Jeanette play at the DCC. Her overall pool game (not esclusively 9-ball) is superior to all the other women on the tour and she did very well last year, as I recall.

There was detailed discussion about it in Sarah Rousey's forum as well as Lisa Marr's (if it has not been deleted). I think it was also discussed here in the main forum too. You may want to do a search. But your question can be answered in Sarah Rousey's forum for sure...good luck.

Sherm,
The main reasoning behind it all was that the WPBA wants the events to be sanctioned.I agree I think it is crazy to restrict them in that way and limit their income as well as the publicity that they would bring for the WPBA.

Personally, I think it's silly.
If anything, they're getting free publicity.
If you like seeing the ladies play, it may result in you buying a ticket for a WPBA event. The WPBA would have no investment in exposing their players to the pool enthusiasts who think it's a man's game

If i'm not mistaken, WPBA members need to request a "WAIVER" in order to play in non WPBA events.
From what i was told, all members were contacted via email or other methods to state that waivers would not be granted to the DCC.

Apparently it does not adhere to the WPBA standards for their image.

i believe that for the most part the wpba has an "open waiver" policy. basically unless noted the waiver is "open" so that they can play in any tournament they want. and they were told they could not play as you said. i could be wrong but i think thats how it works.

I doubt the WPBA sees the DCC as a publicity event since there is no TV coverage.

The whole email begins with a statement about the WPBA, then about waivers, then how waivers are requested....blah blah blah.

This is the last paragraph in the email, verbatim.

PLAYER UPDATE: DERBY CITY CLASSIC

The Derby City Classic has requested WPBA Recognition status for its up-coming tournament. After careful review and consideration, the WPBA Board of Directors has denied this request. Denial for sanctioning is based on a conflict with our existing Player Policy Guidelines and Code of Conduct policy; therefore NO player will receive a waiver to play in this tournament. Failure to adhere to this No Waiver Policy will result in action taken by the WPBA Board of Directors towards the infringing player.

hope this answers the question
