WPBA Info?

The Great Lakes Classic at the Blue Chip Casino, in Michigan City, IN, is coming up 3/8-3/12. Can anyone give me info on how ticketing is handled? Do they sell day passes or are they by sessions? How much do the tickets for WPBA events cost? The tournament runs Wed - Sun, we are planning on going, on either Sat or Sun, which day is best, next to the last day or the last day? Is anyone here planning on going to the Great Lakes Classic?

Thanks,
Tracy

Here's the link to link-http://www.wpba.com/cms/?pid=1000088. Looks like the Blue Chip is handling the tickets. Don't know if I'll be there or not. I'd like to catch a couple of events in the next year if I can manage it.

Thanks for the link, Terry. Do ticket prices vary from one event to the next? I'm still wondering, how many matches there might be, on the last day?

Thanks,
Tracy

I attended the event last year on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was full of matches leading up to the television taping of the 2 semi-final matches and the final on Sunday. So for lots of matches, go on Saturday. For the "show" of the television tapings and the semi's and finals, go on Sunday. I don't remember the pricing of the tickets, but you purchase them through the gift shop at the casino. I believe tickets go on sale this next Wednesday, February 8th. It's a small room, if they have it in the same room as last year, so tickets will probably go pretty quickly. Last year, Sunday tickets were "sold out" a few weeks in advance. I happened to call and catch a few that had been returned, so I was able to go.

You going again this year? I think I am leaning toward the Saturday, rather than Sunday.

Bug-man,
If the WPBA uses their traditional format, then your advice is sound.

At the Florida and Peoria events last year, they used a much DIFFERENT format. They used double elim. down to 16 players, then re-drew, put them in new brackets and played them down. Something like 4 matches on Saturday, 4 matches on Sunday; all taped for television. In this format Saturday and Sunday are both "television days" - the great action was on FRIDAY using this format.

I would recommend checking the format of the tournament before deciding on your days of attendance.

Also, the VIP tickets for television days are TOTALLY USELESS unless you are prepared to stand in line for an hour or two (usually 2) to be one of the first ones in the venue when it opens. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Tracy,

If you go on saturday then on Sunday the 12th you could drive to Joliet Il (apx 1 1/2 hours) where Melissa "THE VIPER" Little and her COACH and pro pool player Mark Haddad are going to be involved in an amateur scotch doubles tournament where one of the luck amateur teams get to split up and and Meliss "THE VIPER" Litte and Mark Haddad as their partners. Melissa will also be doing an exhibition that is only $5.

The tournament is listed here in the forums / also posted on www.chicagolandpool.com

Willie, thanks for the format reminder. Do they post the format anywhere on the WPBA website? If not, I guess I'll just shoot Peg an e-mail. Last year, we did stand in line for an hour or so to get in for the Sunday matches. Again, it was a small room and they only had multiple rows of seating on 3 of the 4 sides of the table. Willie, are you road-tripping north to watch?

Tracy, yes I'm going again this year. Probably both days....maybe even Friday night. It's nice when the tourney is only 35 minutes from home.

Rag-man,
I was planning on attending, I have a cousin who lives in Michigan City and would put me up (?or put up with me?); but my band has 2 gigs that weekend and I had to cancel my plans. Oh well, I'll make it to Peoria for sure.

One of my friends is playing in the tournament and will be giving me a very hard time for not attending (I missed it last year due to work commitments).

This freaking day job is DEFINITELY getting in the way of my pool addiction.

I don't know how to find out the format, perhaps SJM will post on this; he usually is "in the know."

If anybody finds out the format let us know . I would like to go Saturday if it is not a tv taping.

Of course it won't be quite the same going to a pool tourney and not seeing williebetmore there LOL

I am about 40 minutes south of MI City. Where are you located? I met you at DCC, but things were so hectic down there, I didn't catch your whereabouts.

I don't know if I am up for that much driving on a Sunday, but I hope it goes well for you. You are planning to send a royalty check to the AZB/1P.org Room Fund, for using the scotch doubles raffle format, aren't you? ;)

T-man,
The royalty check is a MOST EXCELLENT idea. Unfortunately, though many people are unaware of this; it was Jeanette Lee's idea.

When she was approached with the idea of playing in a raffle event, she said it would be more fun as a Scotch Doubles, with coaching and sharking. She also signed up her husband for the other pro, then insisted on finding a last minute substitute when George could not play (we offered to just cancel).

I hope anyone who enjoyed the Scotch Doubles would go out of their way to thank Jeanette (PROFUSELY) should they run into her in Michigan City. She really went the extra mile, JUST for our entertainment.

I'm in Portage. Where are you located? We'll have to search each other out in Michigan City in a few weeks.

I live in a sea of corn. LOL Actually, the town is called Winamac, don't blink or you'll miss it. I'll say, 'hi', when I see you. How's that room on 6 near the High School in Portage? I've been by it several times during the day, but it has never been open when I was up there.

Tracy
Just a note, this was post number 1,000. I guess I need to get a life, like many others here.

I could try. When they ask, "What's in it for me?", what should I tell them?

Ah, Winatuckey as I've heard it called! I shouldn't joke, you only have to get a mile or so south of Rt. 6 and you're in "a sea of corn".

To the east of PHS is TJ's Pocket Billiards but I don't think they open until 3:00-ish, after school hours. I shoot on a Monday night in-house league there. We have 11 or 13 3-person teams on Monday nights for 8-ball. They also have an in-house 9-ball league on Tuesday nights. They have 9-footer and about 14 bar boxes.

They take good care of the equipment, polish the balls regularly, and change cloth on the tables before it gets ripped up or grungy-dirty. Overall, a very nice place. It's a younger crowd, but they try to do a good job of keeping the loitering/horseplay to a minimum. They run late-night (1:00 a.m?) tourneys on Friday and Saturday nights during the winter, as well as an afternoon tourney on Saturdays (I think).

If you're ever up that way on a Monday night between 6:30 and 9:00, stop in, I should be there. Otherwise, we could make plans to meet up and hit a few sometime.

It's been there quite a few years and the people that own it are great people and good shooters as well, Terry and Julie. When I was pre-bar-league age, there wasn't a place like TJ's where I could shoot leagues as a minor, so I give them credit for running leagues for teenagers.

Dang, you guys are embarrassing me and all self-respecting Indiana residents.

We DO NOT live in a "sea of corn," that is a demeaning and insulting way to refer to our great state.

From now on please use the official designation and say we live in "The Great Corn Forest."

FYI....tickets went on sale today for this event. I never found out for sure which format they are using, but I'm assuming it's the "standard" format as last year. When I called for tickets, they were selling a morning and an afternoon session for Saturday and only one session for Sunday.
