The WPBA will return to the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mt. Pleasant, MI January 26-29, 2012. Jasmin Ouschan is the defending champion of this event. Watch www.soaringeagleopen.com for ticket pricing and lodging information.
Mt. Pleasant is located in the middle of MI and is home to Central Michigan University. The Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort has 502 elegant rooms. The hotel offers a large indoor pool, outdoor jacuzzi and a world class spa. For dining there are 7 different food outlets including a steak house and large buffet. They also offer a Kids Quest and Cyber quest for those traveling with children. They offer a large gaming area with slots and table games, plus a separate poker room. Another attraction is the Talon nightclub in the center of the casino.
The tournament is located in the Entertainment Hall adjacent to the casino and will be taped for later ESPN broadcast. Alongside the WPBA in the same room will be a large amateur singles event with $10,000 added.

Presumably no streaming of the WPBA event?

Many years ago I attended the WPBA tour event in that place. It is a very nice place. In that Steak restaurant I ate ELK and that was the first time I ate Elk in my life. That was a very delicious meal. Their bar had even some unique beverages like Louis XIII Cognac. That was the first time I ever had that cognac.Ofcourse it was very pricy 150$ for a shot - only one- one and half s OZ.

Hotels

I'm considering driving up for a few days for this tournament. I would eat and gamble at the Casino, but would prefer to stay somewhere else, as I would be traveling alone. Are there any other hotels within ten miles that could shave a bit off the budget? I'm just not an Elk and Cognac kind-a guy.

Thanks for any info. It looks like a nice alternative to the Derby to me. I prefer watching Women's pool anyway, and the amateur tournament is a also a plus.

There is a Best Western and Hampton Inn right down the street from it. I think there is a few more from when I was planning on going last year but there was a huge snowstorm between there and Chicago making the drive not worth it. The BW is like $80/night.

Thanks

Thanks Joe_Jaguar.

I looked into your recommendations and discovered that there are lots of options in the area. Looks like a great place for the Tournament.

Anyone know if there is an actual player list up somewhere? The new WPBA doesn't provide much info on their website, and all I can find is the AZ story on the "Premier Players" that wil be there. I enjoy watching some of the non-premier players (NPP) sneak up on the premiers on occassion, and I'm curious if anyone knows whom the NPP's might be...

Also, Anyone care to jump in an explain the Michigan Ranking System for Amateurs as compared to maybe the APA or BCA Ranking System? I am assuming everyone from outside of Michigan must play BB or higher?

I'll give this a shot.

The divisions in MI are as follows...

C
B
BB
A

For comparison, WI uses...

B
A
AA
Master

Note that the groups from MI and WI are equal (C=B, B=A, etc)

The groups really can't be defined by "A C player should never run a rack", or "A BB can run 2 out of 7 racks" etc.

The groups are more clearly viewed like this, the beginning player would probably start in the MI "C" division. If he consistently placed high in the "C" division then he probably would get moved to the "B" division. And so on.

If we don't know you, or can't get a line on you, then yes, you would have to play as a BB at the Soaring Eagle Open III

Rankings

Thanks. That helps.

I would never have thought a 'C' player would be a beginner.

"BB' should be just right for an upper-level league player I would guess.

They had one more stop during March at Vieja (sp?? sorry) Casino, San Diego, CA.

S.G.

Turns out the stop at Viejas never happened, after 13 successful years there. And it didn't look like that the casino fell on hard times during the economic downturn. I don't know what happened but Viejas always brought out the big crowds.

No one would ever even know it. This event just went down without any posts. They playing the semis and finals today? They have really dropped the ball by not having any streaming, free or PPV.

Ewa Laurance in the finals. She just beat Ga Young Kim 7-6! This is the first time she's been in the final of a WPBA event in over a decade! I'm so excited to see if she wins it.
