wrap section depth...

When applying an Irish linen wrap, how deep should the cut be on the handle where the wrap will be applied?

For Blue mountain about .025" deep, which means a total of .050" taken off the diameter. But be aware that Irish linen varies a few thousandths of an inch in thickness from one brand and one roll to another. So it is best if you have not used that roll before to cut a short test area into the cue then lay the linen into the groove to test the depth. Keep cutting slightly deeper until you get the fit you want. Also how tightly you hold each round of linen up against the lhe last round will make a difference on how low it will press. If you run it up against the last round really tight the linen won't press as low.

Thanks Cueman! When using bits with the router, how long should the straight bits be? You recommend 3/4" V-Groove for points and 3/4" Straight? The straight bit is best to cut wood down to size or is there a better method?
Thanks for all your help!

I use 3/4" X 3/4". I prefer to use the 3/4" bit stood straight up to cut off of the side of the bit for smoothest cut. But to cut wrap groove I put the router in the horizontal position and cut off of the end of the bit.

The ones we use are 21 thou a side. Leather is close to 20 thous as well.
Hey, Chris. Off topic but it is November.

Plan to have it ready early next year. Won't take any pictures of my ugly proto-type. Once I get a new machine ready I will post pictures and prices on my web site.
Most leather tends to be more like .026" in my experience. What brand of linen do you use? I have not tried Atlas' newer "Genuine Irish Linen." That was to replace Blue Mountain. I still have some Blue Mountain but will have to change when I run out.

Thanks Chris.
The linen we have was ordered from Atlas eons ago. They're around 21 thou after pressing.
Cortland's even a little thinner.
We get lether from Tiger. Some are uneven so we sandblock the backside to even them out. We have not tried your leather but exposed wrap is so in these days, leather-wrapping has slowed down quite a bit.

Ever use the Hurlbert (sp) linen?
I like it the best. I really don't like the Blue moutain.

I also like Hulberts better than the new Blue Mountain.
There is no New Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain went out of business. Are you speaking of what Atlas is calling Genuine Irish Linen?
