Wrapped v wrap less cues

I'm new to the forum, and having been out of pool playing for over 20 years I am curious about all these newer wrap less cues (to me anyway). Is it strictly a personal choice thing, or is there a performance reason for going this route?

personal choice. Then, we can get into the kind of wrap for an even longer thread...

It's personal preference. If you are used to playing with a house cue or sneaky pete, this is a good option since the feel is the same.

think of it like this, condom or no condom, if you got a small .... and don't know how to use it what difference does it make. or vice versa:thumbup:

The first cue I bought (3 years ago) had a linen wrap. I figured "with wrap must be better than without", right? Wrong, at least for me. I always felt like the cue was slipping out of my hand. I get a lot better grip, with less effort, from a wrapless cue. Bought a sneaky pete and love it.

I think a lot of it has to do with the natural oiliness of your skin. Some folks have dry skin and others don't.

For me...it's all I will play with. I cannot abide the distraction of a wrap seam or either end of the wrap to wood. I can move my grip hand cleanly, as the shot may dictate. Also, with some of the gorgeous woods used in cues, it's just a damn shame to cover that up, IMHO.

For me...playing with a wrapped cue is much like playing with a glove...the feel is just not the same.

Preference

I don't want to pay money to cover up good looking wood. I always thought all wraps will eventually come loose some where. Irish linen does not interest me but some of those elephant and other exotic wraps have a cool factor to me. Kind of like exotic skinned pistol holsters holding a good 1911 Govt. Mod. I wonder if Irish Linen might not be better for a hot and humid place where hands get sticky. Not much of an issue here in South Central Alaska. In the end if you like it go for it.

Think of it this way, if you played 30 years ago meucci was putting out a wrapless feeling cue back then. I like how a nicely figured wood handle looks on a cue, and a wrap was always just covering that up for me. My hands don't sweat, and wraps get dirty with chalk and sweat and look bad.

If you have sweaty hands, or like a wrap, there are plenty of options out there. If you like how a wrapless cue looks, then get one.

It is a trend. Linen was king for many years. Theb several years ago Leather took over as the most popular choice and now wrapless is most popular. I expect a come back for linen now.

Leather then cork....house cue no wrap got use to it and that was it

What? No plugs yet for stacked leather??? ;)

Actually, I'm old school..like linen wraps on my playing cue, but my break cue is wrapless. Go figure. It really is personal preference.

I feel the same way about a wrapless cue. I play with 60" cues for the same reason. I don't find myself holding the buttcap.

Over the years I've played with both, and really don't have a preference, though my current player has a leather wrap. I loved the cue's looks, loved the hit, so I bought it. I like both equally as well.

As a newbie cuemaker I would rather use a nice piece of wood for the grip area and finish the entire cue. I just find it easier and I absolutely love that wrapless cues are the current trend.

Yeah, linen wraps aren't horribly hard to do, but when most people ask for a wrap they want unicorn shoulder skin or something just as rare. As a newbie, I would much rather not risking money on messing up some rare wrap. That is why I love the wrapless trend!

With that said, I enjoy a nice leather wrap on my playing cue, hehe. :) My personal favorite for looks is the white/black ringtail lizard wrap.

Yes, personal choice. But it also depends on your grip.
I have a very very lose grip with only two fingers + thumb barely holding the cue...lol...and, for me, wrapless is definitely the way to go. They feel, again to me - more sticy, and thus for that lose grip work amazingly well. The only thing that comes close is leather but I prefer the consistency from cue to cue and they're zero maintenance.
I just recently discovered this, better late than never.

Oh yea, PLUS - and this is big for me, you don't have any difference in feeling if your hand slips too far back and you reach the end of the wrap.

If you find that you prefer wrap then some Predators have a wrap that goes all the way back.
I still can't believe that even the finest cue makers out there don't offer wrap all the way back.
I've talked to many but once I bring it up they lose interest in selling me a cue.....regardless of price...

Go wrapless and you won't have to think about any of these things.

I love the feel of a wrapless cue and that is what I play with but just like everyone else said it just comes down to preference.
