African Blackwood is not true black, it's purple. Off to buy wood today, including African Blackwood but it will not be dry and seasoned. May have a board of birdseye, that will fit the bill and will look when I return tonight but maybe someone else will rescue you before than. And Birdseye has eyes on 2 sides, you see the edge of the eye on the other 2 faces.

I have several pieces of 4-sided birdseye maple, however only in 18".
They are not easy to get but certainly available.

point taken. Since the eyes go from the pith to the bark in a straight line, hence my remark about being on two faces, you do get eyes on the quartered faces, coming in at an angle, as you get close enough to the heart.

If I'm not mistaken, once quarter sawn is turned round it looks just like flat sawn.

Yes, and you know you are not mistaken about the grain. The eye still radiates from the pith, not haphazardly though the tree, only because the turned piece is large enough in diameter and close enough to the heart do you get eyes on the quartered faces.

thanks for the responses everyone, i might be off a little bit with my descriptions.
still looking though - particularly for a nice piece of BEM. if my prices offered are off, please let me know what it would cost and i'm sure we can agree.
