Useful tips
Howdy, Warfdiesel.
I got into One-Pocket a few months ago and I'm addicted. I believe it is the most interesting of all pool games and demands more concentration, knowledge and attention to every aspect of pool, especially banking and safety play. Many say its akin to chess and I agree.
I can recommend a few videos and books that should get you started in the right direction.
The videos are:
1) One Pocket - A Common Sense Approach by Bill Incardona, and
2) Power One Pocket by Scott Frost.
These are easily found with a Google search and are around $35 each.
There are also accu-stat videos of actual One-Pocket matches that will help you with strategy - Reyes, Pagulayan, et all....
The books are:
1) "Winning One Pocket" and
2) "Shots, Moves and Strategies", both by Eddie Robin.
These hard-bound, leather and signed books are expensive. Expect to pay appx $150 for each (good condition, 1st edition) and appx $200 for a 2nd edition of Winning 1 Pocket on the used market because the books are no longer published and are in demand currently because of the increased interest in the game.
The price is high but the books helped my game tremendously. They are chock full of invaluable information, diagrams, stories, tips and knowledge. I would definitely watch the videos first then buy the books if your interest increase, the cost isn't too prohibitive and you want to learn more. There is more information in the books but the videos are good and complement the books well.
I just purchased a 2nd copy of both books as a gift for a friend who introduced me to the game (and continues to kick my ass in one-pocket) and I recommend them, especially if you can find them at a lower price.
As stated above, you'll need to be a decent banker if you want your one-pocket game to improve. There are a few videos on banking/kicking worth viewing if your skills need improving:
1) The Monk's videos on banking and kicking (he has at least two),
2) The Beard's "Banks that Don't Go But Do" videos (vol 1 and 2) and
3) "Only Kicks" by Grady Matthews.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out for you.
