Hi,

I have an old D-8 and need to find one or two good, straight shafts to make it playable. The original shaft is too warped.

Ideally, I'd like to find shafts that match the ring pattern of the D-8, so I think any from D-6 through D-10 would work best.

Might also be interested in an affordable full cue of same vintage with an extra shaft - then I'd have two completes.

Let me know what you have and thanks in advance.

shaft collar sizes

don't forget about the size of the shaft collar. There is a good chance if you find a playable shaft, it may not be a good fit for your butt. You may want to post specs of the OD of the joint collar of the body. You may be money ahead if you have a shaft made for your D8 or buy a cue from the same vintage. I saw a nice d19 (dice cue) on ebay for 255? last time I looked.

Hello J, if you still have the original shaft any good cue smith or cue makers can remove the original collar from the old shaft and place it on a new shaft, it may be easier than finding what you are looking for.

Take care

Or . . .

Just send the butt along with the shaft you have to McDermott and let them build you an exact match. You'd probably be able to get it in a G-Core or i-series to boot.

Sending the butt to McDermott is a fine idea, btw. You would get it refinished, aside from a new G Core shaft and new wrap. Of course, you could also get a predator shaft and have KJ do the ring work. He's one of the best at matching up when making new rings.

Thanks for your replies and help. I've gotten a few good PMs about some older D series shafts that hopefully will work out.

As Mentioned previously, check collar sizes. I have a D1 at .850 and a D9 at .875 a the joint.

shaft sizes

I as well had two D6's and neither shaft was the same collar size. Just make sure what you are looking at will be a good match for your butt. Nothing worse than having a shaft that is so large it overhangs everything or too small and looks silly.

Looks like it is .850. I can't find my calipers, but it reads a little over 27/32nds.

I thought about moving the ring over, but it is faded and a bit rough on the edges - it was not in the good condition as described when I purchased remotely.

I have looked into sending back to McDermott, but with shipping both ways and a new shaft, I'd invest more than than the cue is worth - probably double.

McDermott

Yep, that is the same thing I ran into with one of the d6's. In the end, I sold the butt for 100.00. You might be better off just cutting ties with this cue and finding one that is in better condtion or has a nice shaft(s). I do have an old Jensen sneaky that I have posted here that is lower dollar and will play better than a McDermott if interested.

McD Shafts

I have some McDermott Shafts that are unused.

Could it be, the shaft you are looking for is in this group?

Yep, looks like the ring pattern on 1-4 and 9 would work. Can you PM me with details on the collar and shaft diameters, etc?
