I think that a plain Rick Howard player would be the least expensive quality cue that would be anywhere close to the SW. Jazznpool is correct about the hit on the AC cues, also. They have a nice, stiff hit. But if you want the hit of a SW, you have to buy a SW. So many things go into their cues...quality of wood, compound butt taper, shaft taper, etc. I have heard the Zylr cues hit close also, but I have not played with one, and they are not cheap either.

Save your money and try to go to a show like one of the league nationals in Vegas, DCC, SBE, etc. You will see bunches of SW cues there....but take more than $500.

Has anyone ever seen a South West sneaky? I had the opportunity to see one over the summer, and it was hands-down the coolest cue ever made. I believe they only made 5 of them; so if you could find one, the price would probably be $6000 +. Probably worth it though!

haven't seen one with a ivory joint but a friend of mine had one made with two ivory ferrulle shafts, all ivory points that were scrimshawed and ivory inlays in the butt that again were scrimshawed, all in a english nights and king arthur theme.he recentley sold it through john wright before he passed to a collector from the phillipines,it was way nicer than any i have seen in any magazine or bb of cues.the cue hasn't been seen since the sale.

I agree that Rick's cues are close- they are excellent though on their own as well.

I definitely agree. I played with 15+ year old ebony into ebony 6 pointer with 12.4mm shafts for about a year that still played better than any other cue, aside from my current 6 point South. I would give Rick a call if you don't want to spend nearly $2000 for a South.

Actually it was something I dug up in the archives here at AZ. It appeared to be off a website. But, since a couple of you seemed amazed at that...I now assume it was an email from SW to someone here (on the forum).
I can't remember how I stumbled upon it.

They used to be.....at least, a couple years ago, they were.

I bought one direct from Laurie a couple years back. Birdseye forearm and sleeve, linen wrap, simple joint collars and matching buttcap in brown phenolic.

I paid 500, plus 25 for FedEx overnight shipping.

I wrote her about 6 months ago to get another one...and she said they had no plans to make any in the near future. Hard to say how "near" the near future was....but it didn't sound promising. I still put my name in for one, since the wait was alot less than 8 years for a "regular" one.

FWIW
