Shaft 1: 13.08 mm right under the ferrule 3.76 oz
Shaft 2: 13.10 mm right under ferrule 3.72 oz
Both shafts are "peeled"/heavily sanded if you will, and both shafts have very slight roll

Point: 8 recut points Cochen Rosewood recut into Madrone burl
Handle: Cochen Rosewood
Butt sleeve: Zircote burl

The cue was played with but not abused in any way. There are a couple of minor dings, dent, scratches. There is one chip through the finish at one point as pictured.

shafts

Doubt you will get any interest with those shafts:(

i was thinking the same thing.

can you give a little more description regarding the shafts, i.e. where they hand sanded, sanded on a lathe?

who sanded them and why, was something wrong w/ them to have them sanded?

i'm interested in the cue itself, but have some concerns.

I believe the shafts are Peeled... it removed all of the finish to help with the high humidity.. also helps for people with smaller hands. This shaft looks like it was not sealed after.

Less than ideal.

Eric's taper generates a nice lively hit but it's quite a short pro taper that many find it difficult to smoothly follow through, especially with a closed bridge.

I have 3 sugartrees and one shaft turned down, maybe lengthened the taper a bit, easier to follow through and I don't see much changes in the hit, still lively, easy to play with, and a tiny bit softer than original taper, which is good imo.

don't get me wrong, I can play with Eric's original taper very well, but a little bit longer taper is more ideal for me personally. Eric's shaft wood alone makes any shaft exceptional.

I myself have played with this particular cue of Nam and I can say it is a monster playing cue, just like every other Sugartrees.

you can find below Eric's comment on a turned down shaft

The cue was played with by Luong Chi Dung, a top pro in Vietnam. Below is the link for the match between him and Jeff Deluna

I can take a picture of him with the cue.

Now let's get back to the reason why the shafts were peeled.
Billyard got it right, humidity and small hands are two reasons.
The shafts were turned down using a lathe not hand sanded. It may seem odd to you guys in the States but it is common in Asia where humidity is high. If you join in world pool tournament, you will see a lot of Asia top pros do this to their shafts. The practice began when people feel the shafts sticky with original finish in high humidity environment. Long follow-through is also a reason for a parabolic taper shaft like Sugartree. I myself start poking the CB instead of stroking it when the shaft were not turned down.
Last but not least, do you notice that the pros rarely use gloves? A champion told me that he can not feel the shaft gliding in his bridge hand and feel for the length of follow-through and stroke speed when using gloves. High-caliber players here like the feel of bare wood so basically it boils down to three main reasons: humidity, smaller hands, and feel.
Trust me, I would never do anything harmful to the cue. It is not a cheap cue. And Taiwanese and Chinese players wouldn't do anything stupid to their SW if it hurt playability of their cues. At the end of the day, those cues are their tools/weapons to make money for them anyway.
Hope my explanation makes sense to you.
Thanks
Nam

I had one of the shafts like that and it was playing just fine. People is states are nuts if the shaft is not original or was modifies in any way, especially not by the cuemaker who made the cue

I am sure this cue will still play just as good as before

This will affect the value. There is really no question in my mind. If the person who modified the shaft did not have a taper setup on a lathe, then it would be very easy to create uneven "waves" in the shaft by hand sanding alone. When you change the taper, you change the hit. It probably still plays well, but it's not original. That's just being objective.

I wouldn't have modified Eric's shafts, they hit the way they do for a reason. JMO

I use a 4oz. Sugartree shaft on an old McDermott D-4 and absolutely love the combo. Eric makes a great shaft.

shafts

Id say those shafts play alot better now. Longer smoother taper. Not dead stiff. If u want dead stiff go to walmart and get a graphite or fiberglass cue that should be right up your alley. I think theyd play great. Dont see how someone would think theyve been ruined, only improved. Just my opinion.

Thanks Shortyz and Snowmon34 for the kind words.

I've seen a number of Szamboti cues have 12mm shafts and nobody asked if the taper was changed or not. Mine are even not turned down that much.
To each his own
