Yet another "I need help selecting a cue" thread from a 1st time poster here

First off, LOVE the site and thanks to the entire community! Now to my dilemma. I'm 48 and I've never owned my own stick, basically lived in a pool hall in my teens but haven't shot much in the last 20-25 years. A friend at work wants me to join a league so we shot some after work the other night. I was actually amazed at how well I could still move the ball around at will, I'm now very inconsistent of course but I know that will change with repetition.

I always played great with "house sticks" but the quality isn't what I remember. The other night I was only able to find one decently straight stick with a decent tip so I need to buy a stick. I tried gathering as much info here, and from other sites, before posting and it seems that a lot of people are raving about the Players HXT line. My question basically pertains to the Players line, shafts and tips, but if there's something better then by all means please tell me. I don't want to put more than $150.00 into a stick and have been looking at the cheapest Players HXT or a Players cue with the standard maple shaft.

The HXT has the Kamui black soft tip, the standard shafted sticks have the Le Pro tips. I don't know the difference or what difference it would make, other than I would simply have to adapt and get used to either one. I would be perfectly fine with a "Pete" but the Players line only comes with the standard shaft.

Would I be better served paying roughly $50 more dollars and getting the HXT LD shafted cue, or save the $50 and get the standard shafted cue? I don't need, nor necessarily want, a nice looking stick but I do want a solid and consistent stick with a great tip. Sorry for the length of my post but any help will be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry about the tip - you can change that any time.

If you're just getting back into the game after that many years, I'd go with the LD shaft. It's not necessary right now, but when you start learning to use side spin, it will really cut the learning curve down. Not totally necessary (honestly, I shoot with non-LD shafts myself), but it will make your life a lot easier as you improve. The decision's more difficult for people who use a lot of sidespin but learned with non-LD, but if you're learning now, it's kind of a no brainer.

Welcome to the boards!

Yea ill second the other poster I'd go with a players hxt there great cue for the money I'd go with the hxt99 its great cue for the money u really can't beat it welcome too the site welcome back too pool

I used to have a players value before I lost it at a pool hall. It was a great starter cue. I'm now looking into either a viking v(any model #)k- meaning vikore LD shaft or a mcdermott cue with a g shaft. Good luck

I agree with the other posters on this. LD shafts are being used by pros and amateurs alike all over. The it nice thing about player's cues low deflection line is that you get a pretty good hitting cue with some high end cue features for a low low price. Not to mention that they have a lifetime warranty against warpage.

If you are looking for a cue that is in the same price range and American made I would choose Pechauer over viking. The quality of Vikings have gone down over the years, I speak from experience in buying another one after getting back into the game after many years off. I would not waste my money on a viking ever again. Pechauer has a better balance, hit, and finish than any viking I have ever touched

i make custom cue and trying to promot my cues my cues start at 350 i might do one for you for 150 to get you back in the game i need some feedback on how people like the hit maybe you caN HELP ME OUT
