You want an older or newer Big Name cue?

Pick any famous cuemaker who's still cranking 'em out today. Which would you prefer to play with: one of his older cues, or one made more recently?

Update: I mean a cue that has never been used, whether made recently or years ago.

Why?

I like "seasoned" cues and hate putting bimps and doinks in new ones:)

Cue

a newer one as long as the cuemaker did not have to use a magnifying glass too much ... lol Nothing against cuemakers, but I think they peak just like poolplayers do, and after they reach a certain age, that they have already done their best work.

What age do I consider them topped off - Just off the cuff, I wouild say
68, but that could vary, depending on the individual.

Why a new one? Because I believe manufacturing processes have improved, and inlay work today is more varied with more detail if desired.

I tend to like the cues that have the bigger pin and either wood to wood or phenolic joint, becasue I crank my cue very tight together (for in my mind more of that one piece cue feel), I also think that some cue makers cues are balanced better than others.

Hm. You might be interested in the cue shown below. (Click thumbnails for larger images.) The pin is 1/2" x 8 wood, impregnated with an acrylic resin to harden it. It doesn't get more like a one-piece than wood to wood held together by wood.

The forearm and butt are highly figured snakewood. The white is unbleached elephant ivory. The black is linen phenolic. The shaft is a Predator 324. The original curly maple handle shown in these pics was crap. Sheldon Lebow just replaced it for me.
