Your best pool

Maybe something related to earlier threads about killer instinct etc. BUT what are the manners when you feel most comfortable to play your best pool? I'm not talking about when winning the most but when feeling like you are playing with the full capasity you have.

For me it seems to be always with including most or preferably all of following:
- playing in the evening or night
- during the late afternoon some swimming and sauna with my family
- having a good meal about 3 hours before playing, and good means something not too heavy; some pasta with nice sauce for example
- had some sleep in previous 24 hours

Let's see..

hungover with a light breakfast and a beer..

a few drinks without being drunk, but to the point where I don't care and I'm just having fun..

completely sober and somewhat hungry..

I find my game tends to deteriorate slightly if I play while or right after I stuff my face..

If my life is going good I usually play good. If I am worried about bills or just had a fight with the other half or something is wrong - I dont play well.

If all else fails ....

tons of Jager
a good ammount of choice substances to allow for 3 good days of straight playing
a big mouth attitude
and at the end of it all.... breakin my cue.
JUST KIDDING

Essentials for me:

  • 3 to 5 hours worth of sleep (tops);
  • A steady intake of unhealthy foods and beverages;
  • A general disregard for my own health and well being;
  • A comfortable pair of jeans;
  • and a comfrotable pair of sneakers.

Damn, forgot one key issue on my list. That, actually is something to do daily so it's easy to forget to mention. I need my portion of fresh air; so taking a walk/run with dog for about 45 to 60 minutes before that sauna and swimming.

I have always said if I could have the night I shoot league off of work so I can nap before shooting, I'd always win. I agree with the pasta thing no less then 2hrs. before shooting. and I wish there was a way regulate the edge taking off buzz that a few beers(or drink of choice) does for me, that is when I chose to drink. I normally drink H2O, I don't like the inconsistancies sugar from soda(pop) does to my long night.

If I get myself pumped up ahead of time, running different racks and scenerios in my head has always seemed to help. If I knew I had a set coming up that I had to be on top of my game, I would relax the day before and think about playing perfectly. I would picture in my head breaking and running rack after rack, making the right position choices etc.
Day of the game/set be rested, dont eat too much, and I have a superstition about pall mall non filtereds....but thats just me.
Light, but concentrated practice an hour or so before I had to play and assuring myself that no matter what happened I was going to win.
I said all that to say this, think positive, practice correctly. Dont dog yourself with negative thought like "I really need to work on this part of my game", if there is an area you need to work on, think of it like "when I am done with this shot, I will have mastered it".
Positive thinking will when you alot of games when the chips are down.

When I"m on, nothing else is relevant except what I'm doing on the table. Not that I don't notice what's going on around me, I just don't give it any attention. I'm not grinding, just flowing along mapping things out...not trying....just making balls and on to the next one.

I usually drink a coffee....but not too much to be edgy.
try not to eat much, but not crash from low blood sugar.
and not have anything to do in the near future to have to think about!

and I always play my best where I don't really know anyone...

clear the decks of old business

before you "deserve" the chance to reward yourself of a fun evening, you need to have made the day productive in some fashion towards your goal(s) in life. Then, thinking well, pool excellence is but icing on the cake.

Or, try walking into the room feeling scroungy and unwashed like a manged dog, smelly and no decent girl present would even touch... see what "action" you get. Life lesson, being unworthy and knowing it.

Cleaned, buffed, shined, good with all and the world, able and willing to pick the best, not just any "action" happening in your purview, and willing to test the waters and ride with it a bit to see if it is that good, or just surface... and the fortitude/willingness to walk away to something better if your new friends indicate a touch of the mange or displeasing in any fashion.... surely you have better things to do than hang out here and put up with that kind of bullshit.... choices, many, good ones, exercise them quickly. Meet a dickhead, get the F*ck away from them as politely and quickly as you can, there may be problems later if his females follow you..., get phone numbers and suggest fun things to do possibly and follow up soon. 'Nuff said.

I always play best with a little buzz and a smoke but now that I'm quiting both of them I am really worried about my pool game.

This is exactly my point. pool is not life directly. If life is going well, pool follows.
