How many times have you bought books, tapes or dvds and got one or two things out of them and that was it. I am sure a lot of times.

What was your best learning sources, starting with #1
Instructors?
DVDs?
Practicing time on a table?
Playing better players?

I bought a few books at the beginning that totally fu#$-ed my game up. Then I ran into a few pros, who basically said it's very difficult to teach the right things. So I threw away all those bulls@#$ books and videos. Lost money to better players. Then, I ran into a guy who can play and teach. That is the key, if the guy that's suppose to be teaching you how to climb mt everest, has never climb the mountain...you better run.

Of course you mean people such as Hank Haney & Butch Harmon?

I'm a "hands on" type learner. Instruction has been the best for me.

The best learning source...... Hmmm, that's too hard to call.

I do know I've spent more time practicing on the table than practically anyone I know. So, I guess I can't say that practicing on the table is the best learning source, although I have probably learned more about the game through playing than any other source but that's just because I've spent so much time doing that.

irock, I think you need a combinations of things. If you are willing to go off by yourself and practice the things taught in the book/dvds then you can learn.
I think if you want to speed up the learning process and make sure you are practicing CORRECTLy then a good instructor is the best way to go. The instructor does not have to be a hall of fame player, but he should be able to demonstrate what he is teaching.

An instructor for me....and watching, reading to enforce technique.

So what are you saying? These guys can teach but can't play?

Let me answer for him. No, a person doesn't have to play at expert level in order to teach. Knowledge and talent are rarely balanced. In fact, many great players have very limited knowledge and can't teach at all.

Me. I have been my best learning source.

I wanted to learn. I knew where to look for the answers to my questions. Unless you know what you want to learn, you are wandering a path to no where.

Books, dvds, instruction are meaningless unless you want to learn.

So which Champions do you know that was taught by a non expert level instructor? How do you teach a person how to be a champion when you don't know what it feels like to hit a ball like a champion? I mean we're going to aspire might as well go all the way right?

Johny Archer? He ran with Swanee.

John Smidt...he ran with some champ. He plays 14.1...but hey he still a champ.

Efren Reyes? He probably had 20 champions in his town.

How do you know when the ball is hit as clean as it could be? Even when you are told exactly what you are suppose to be feeling....you won't get it until a lot of things are in the right place.

So if these golf instructors have never played championship speed, I'm not sure I would turn Tiger down for them. The only difference should be that they are no longer capable of competing due to age or lack of stamina. A golf swing is like a pool stroke in that it can only get better, until your body deteriorates.
