Z2 Shaft 11.75MM vs 13.2MM

Hey guys, I got the Z2 11.75MM and it plays outstanding, as I was browsing the Predator site just now I seen the 13.2MM option being offered. I was looking for some feedback from someone lucky enough to have tried both shafts and be able to give some feedback on it.

Me being mainly a banger I know I'm not able to get the most out of the shaft playing precision points on the cueball which is a highlight of the thinner shaft.

I play in a lot of bars where it isn't practical to bring a cue in and usually not necessary anyways. I was thinking the thicker shaft would give me an easier adjustment phase going to the house stick with the larger taper. I just love the way the shafts play because of the control it gives over the cue ball.

Any feedback will be awesome, I did a search and wasn't able to find anything.

Hello recanizegame:

One thing to keep in mind that while a thinner shaft seems to offer your eyes more "pin-point precision" in where you hit the cue-ball, a thicker shaft actually offers more tip-surface contact with the cue-ball by virtue of the fact there's a "wider" tip -- and thus more surface contact area -- to "grab" the cue-ball. So while it may seem you're more accurate in where you hit the cue-ball with a thinner shaft, any English you want to apply (whether follow, draw, or side) won't be as pronounced as with a thicker shaft. This is *especially* true on bar tables that use an overweight cue-ball (e.g. Aramith Red-Dot [not Red-Circle]).

Best-case scenario, if your cue-case supports it, is to have both shafts. This way, you're covered for both situations -- "regular cue-ball" or "overweight cue-ball" -based tables. I myself use both of these shafts you mention, and the difference between them on a heavyweight cue-ball -- the ability to apply English -- is dramatic.

Hope this is helpful!

Very nice replies guys thanks a lot. I think I'm going to take your advice on this and go ahead and pick up the extra shaft.

everything i've ever been told and from my own experience says that a 314 shaft is better suited for a bar table while a Z shaft is better suited for a 9 footer. Obviously an 8 foot table is in between and is up to the player which they like best.

I have a Z2 and I love the shaft but have made many mistakes that I shouldn't on a bar table when I used it on them, since then the bigger tip has cut down on some errors on a bar table.

That's correct, and your experience bears this out -- the thicker 314 shaft (13.2mm) is indeed better suited to bar table play because it offers a wider tip (more surface contact area) to "grab" that heavy cue-ball with. Less likelihood for errors as well, as you've no doubt noted. Great post!

you know this was brought up in another thread and one az'r pointed out that the same amount of leather contacts the cueball with bigger and smaller tips.

This is correct. Really, it's about personal preference (as is everything with pool equipment).

I've played on bar tables, and still prefer my Z2 to other shafts. Why? Because it's what suits my game best -- be it a 7-footer, 9-footer, 8-ball, 9-ball, 14.1, 1-pocket. Doesn't matter.
