If a guy like Mike Shamos is reading this: In looking at that black dot nerve, it makes me wonder if this is the reason that modern balls have a logo on the cue ball (red dot, blue circle, etc.). It seems like they replaced the ivory nerve spot with a logo. Any truth to that?
Also, curious to find out the final verdict on this ball.
I weighed one of my Ivory Billiard balls at 202 grams or 7.12 ounces. This ball mics at 2.390 slightly over 2 3/8ths.
I just weighed my old Brunswick 3 cushion balls...
6.72 oz. 2.36 in...white
6.79 oz. 2.36 in...white
6.81 oz. 2.35 in...red
The red ball has a crack
Jerry, owner of the old Shakespeare's Billiards downtown gave them to me about 15 years ago.
Forgot I had them.
Mine are small compared to your big ball
I could have made that sound more weird
but I didn't think it was a good idea on family television
Three of those are certainly ivory. The signed one looks like something else -- a closeup might help.I've picked a couple of pool and billiard balls in antique shops over the years
The instructions inside the box brings back memories. In the old days, I bought some ivory cue balls from AE Schmidt, and basically the same instructions came with them. In fact, they recommended not even opening the box for a few days, then not playing with them for awhile. For the end of the seasoning, they even recommended rolling them around a pool table, but not actually playing for another few days. I was usually a bit impatient, as most of us are. The look of these ivory balls is also consistent with what ivory balls should look like, given age. Great post.
All the best,
WW
Seems like a lot of trouble to go through just to play a game of pool.
Maybe I should get some "sweet oil" for my Ivory cues.
Whatever sweet oil is
The ivory billiard balls just don't look anything like this ball
to me
the consistent little pattern is new to me
I have never seen ivory that looked like this one

Awesome information! I think I am leaning towards my first inclination that it is ivory. Sorry WildWing I am going to have to disagree with you this time.
I weighed my red dot cue ball from my centennial set and it comes out at 5.8 oz.

For ivory balls, "sweet oil," I think is a little bit of milk rubbed onto them now and then.
All the best,

I think the PTA (pressed tip authority) needs to be made aware of this change in terminology
