Just wondering if anyone else here has had physical problems from playing too much pool, and if so how did they fix it.

I put table in a couple of months ago and ive just lately had the time to play on it. Well after putting in 4 hours a night for a couple of nights straight ive started to get a sharp pain in my bridge shoulder. It only comes when i play for over 45 minutes. Im hopin its temporary as im too young to start breaking down already. Anyways ice and ibuprofen are working but i havent really tested it so i guess we'll see this weekend.

Well I suppose you could call this a pool related injury.

I stayed too long at the pool hall and my wife hit me in the head with a rolling pin when I got home. Couldn't concentrate for weeks. :D

My lower back gives me a fit if I play for 3 or 4 hours of 9 ball. I guess getting old is part of it, but pain or not I still play!

My bridge shoulder has been bothering me, the Dr tells me I have arthritis and I need to get a MRI and see a specialist.
I can not play anymore than 3 hrs at a time now. A real bummer.

Not entirely related but...

I threw out my bridge shoulder once on a break shot in the middle of the tourney. My shoes had almost no traction, and my back foot slipped. The table caught most of my fall, but my shoulder popped right out of its joint. First time I've ever done that, it hurt like hell. Who said pool is not a contact sport.;)

See avatar for a solution to most shoulder, back, neck, etc. problems.

(This is not a joke :p)

I'm young, but I've had a ruptured disc, compression fracture, upper cross syndrome in my back. As well as surgery for a posterior subluxation in one shoulder and a whole horde of other bodily problems.

A few weeks of yoga in a row and I've never felt better!

Losing weight and strengthening the rest of my body didn't hurt either.

Not to mention all the attractive young women in the class who just love a healthy guy.

I agree that staying/getting in shape makes you feel better...much better. Yoga is great if you like it. I like more traditional stuff myself.

I think too many people rely on drugs and medical treatment before evaluating their lifestyle, eating habits, and exercise regimen...especially in the U.S.

I have lots of problems. I have severe arthritis in my fingers, but I almost think pool helps my hands be flexible.

My lower back and bridge shoulder hurts as well, and I need to get into better shape.

I know that if I concentrate on getting back in shape, my game will follow.

I actually got that same injury....lot's of stretching before you play seemed to take care of that for me.

Yoga goes back a few thousand years in India, how much more tradition do you want? :p

Americans want solutions that are immediate, require no effort and require no change in the habits that caused the problem in the first place. We're pretty messed up.

Not to be too far off topic for the O.P.

Whether it be yoga or otherwise, stretching is one of the best things you can do right now. Your problems sound like they're based around a limited range of motion. It's a pretty simple solution if you're willing to dedicate a little time and investigation.

Good luck!

I tore more cartilage in my knee last week playing nine ball. I applied too much body english on the money ball. It dropped, but my knee was as big as a grapefruit for a week.

Don't Forget

Don't forget the knuckle buster on the break!! I've had a few bloody knuckles from that! :D

My opponents tend to get sore finger tips........from racking!!! :D J/K

If at all possible for anyone suffering from a more chronic back pain resulting from long pool sessions, I recommend receiving professional therapeutic help. I had a back pain that bothered me for a week and a few days following a long pool session, and the best thing I did about it was visit a massage therapist. The muscles in my lower back developed some nasty knots, and while the massage isn't a bed of roses if you're trying to work out a knot, it definitely helps. A session no longer than a 30 minute session focusing on your back is perfect for this problem.

Many have mentioned "bridge arm shoulder pain". Perhaps you putting too much weight on that arm in your stance.

As a remedy, re-evaluate your stance and shift your body weight so your legs are supporting 80-90% of your upper body weight. That will relieve some of the pressure from your bridging arm.

I personally have all sorts of goofly little pool injuries from time to time: pool player elbow (stroking arm), throwing my stroking arm out from improper warm before trying "all-out" breakshots, calusses on my pinky, ring, and middle fingers of my bridging hand, on my index finger of my bridging hand I rub the top raw from thumb pressure-using open bridges-on top of it and I have also had the bridge arm shoulder pain deal. It was almost always that I had not been playing much and could not find my balanced stance.

This is the first time ive had something hurt that stopped me from playing.
I really need to live a healthier lifestyle and maybe do some stretching beforehand. Im gonna check and see if im putting too much weight on it later on tonight at league. Budweiser and southern comfort also help dull the pain, but then I got a whole other set of pains in the morning.

What I usually do before serious play is to stretch my lower back and shoulders. You could do this by finding a chair, doing light twists, and then if there's a clean floor you can also do trunk lifts.

I once saw a local arsehat sweep the cueball so hard after a miss that it rocketed across the next table and hit another guy square in the forehead....

If it had been me that had been hit I know what the remedy would have been but I think the resale on the arsehat's cue would have been nothing afterwards since it would have had a malodorous characteristic.....

As far as your bridge shoulder, I had a similar problem for a while. Whenever i would break i would REALLY relax my left shoulder to the point that i was straining my rotator cuff when i finally went through with the break. I found that tightening up my shoulder and kind of lifting it up toward my neck helps tremendously. Basically when your shoulder is totally relaxed and then you make a semi violent motion it can catch your muscles and tendons off guard and after enough times you can end up straining or pulling something. I'm not sure exactly what is wrong with your shoulder but I would imagine you are just too relaxed.
