Any decent pool halls around the Plantation/Ft Lauderdale area?

I've got a couple of hours to kill, early afternoon. I'd drive up to Atlantic Billiards, but have heard they don't open until 3pm.

HOLLYWOOD BILLIARDS exit 49 off the turn pike. THE ACTION room in south florida.. if you want to play some good. Ask to play monster john or randy epperson. Both great shortstops. Don't even bother with any other rooms down here. It is where all the big action is. opens at 11.

Not a road player, unless that means, "Hit the road, player."

And should I ever play any individual named "Monster" (highly unlikely -- my Mama didn't raise no fool :-) you will first have to give up some *details* relevant to your own experience before I cough up a report.

Having said all that, Hollywood is an old time crusty room with all the usual old-time characters in place. I spent a couple of hours there today and it was fun. I may have the chance to return tomorrow. The tables take some getting use to. If given the opportunity, I hope to dial them in a bit better tomorrow.

Oh, and to the nit there that was trying to take my picture with his cell phone -- get a life. Geez.

haha i went in there and matched up with some painter guy for some cheap sets...when i beat him he said he had to go and everyone said "everytime u get in a match u cant win u say u have to go and then come back an hour later" it was hilarious.

then i met monster john and said id play him cheap...well good thing cuz i def cant beat him. he is a great guy and let me use his jump break to play some other guy and during a ring game we got going the next day. Hollywood was alot of fun. id definately go there.

and if u see some dirty short harley davidson lookin guy that (poops) in 9 balls and thinks he is good. take his money please. he is probably wearing a t-shirt that looks like he found it outside of a tourist shop. one a hole i ran into both my weeks down there

You was spotted right after playing a local...I watched you from the far rail, you take the balls off the table nicely.

Voodoo~~~back under my rock

So how'd did you do Lou?

No action, FSuton, but had a good time. Hollywood is a great old-time, crusty around the edges kinda place. A lot of regulars, friendly atmosphere. Some of the tables were not to my liking. I played on one of the money tables (14?) and the rails are super lively and tend to bank uphill. I certainly wouldn't want to be from out-of-town and have to adjust to that table for big money :-)

Before I went I got a PM and an email telling me who the two best players there were, along with general descriptions and sure enough, the first day I was there the #2 guy comes up to me and asks if I want to play 1pocket. So I look at my watch and tell him I only have and hour left before I have to leave. I know he's the #2 guy, so I figure I'll just donate a couple of bucks to him and say I'll knock them around for $10 a game for an hour.

We play and I can tell he's pretty good, but he gets a lot of good rolls too. Lou loses $30.

The next day I stop by to play and the same thing happens. The #2 guy comes in and wants to play and I look at my watch and I tell him I only have like 45 minutes but will knock them around for $10 till I have to go. We play and Lou not only wins the first couple of games, but also gets a few good rolls.

And then it starts.

#2 Guy (disgusted): "Geez. How they rolling."

Lou says nothing.

(a few shots later, Lou gets another roll)

#2 Guy (really disgusted): "Man this is unbelievable!"

Lou (amused): "It's pool. It happens."

#2 Guy: "But over and over?!"

Lou: "I didn't say anything yesterday when you were getting all the rolls."

#2 Guy: "You're really enjoying this, aren't you?"

Lou: "What? Playing for $10 a game. Sure it's just fun."

#2 Guy: "You know what you are? You're a mother f*cking pr*ck. I'd rather dig a ditch than play for $10 a game."

Lou: "Well, why don't you go unscrew and go dig yourself a ditch."

And so, the merry repartee went for a while longer. I lost that game and my hour was up, so I unscrewed. On the way out the door, one guy stopped me and said, "Don't judge us all by him." Another stopped me and, literally, shook my hand and said, "Forget about him. He's lower than a low life." And a third, at the counter, said, "He's pretty retarded, isn't he."

The next day he came in and offered a half-hearted apology -- while standing 20 feet away -- going on about problems with his boy and what not. I told him I accepted his apology, in about the same vein.

Sooooo, it was all fun :-)

Sorry, chazdillion, didn't see the H-D guy. About the only other guy that said anything to me about playing was a guy who saw me practicing some 14.1 and said he liked to play it too. I offered to play him some, but I think he was busy with something else and just wandered off.

Great story Lou. I thought that only happens to me.

I have a simular story from Seattle. I guess I play way too good for $20 one pocket:grin:

Hey lou,

definately cannot judge us by him. I happen to be friendly with that guy and have done my far share of donating to him. But he tends to blow his top sometimes never at me but i've witnessed it. Sorry it went down like that. the #1 player would have gave you a much better experience. Please don't hesitate to stop by again sometime if your in the area. I'll donate a little :D... playing banks

Lou...Steve/Voodoo Daddy isn't hard to spot. Look for a big guy, who would fit right in with any respectable motorcycle gang, and it's probably Steve (does that sound in any way accurate Steve?)! Nice guy, and can play some too!

Thanks, Voodoo Daddy. You should have come over and said "Hey."

Nah, happens to everyone, at least a couple of times, if you've been around just a bit. I actually thought it was pretty funny -- this guy getting way worked up over just a few good rolls for $10.

Normally I like to play for at least $20, but I knew I was going up against the local #2, on his home track, with my travel cue vs my regular weapon, on equipment that was out of whack, on limited time, and not having hit a ball for a few days. I was, as I said, just in a mood to donate.

I'd love to hear your Seattle story.
