Open or Closed Bridge

98% Closed. Open bridges are for sissy snooker shooters (sss) with itty-bitty cues.

I do prefer the closed bridge. However, my coach do encourage the use of open bridges as it reveals your stroking flaws. Once corrected, you can pretty much use any type of bridge that you like.

If your cue isn't staying planted on your bridge using an open bridge, then you may need a closed bridge. However, if your cue isn't staying planted on your bridge using an open bridge, that's definitely a sign that you're doing something wrong. In the end, if you're hitting the cue ball where you intend to, then the results will be the same with a closed or an open bridge, and so you just have to find out which way helps you shoot more accurately. For me, it's an open bridge on probably 95% of shots. I do occasionally like to close it for power shots. But not all power shots. It depends how I feel.

Since I have learned a few other new things with my stance (big one with my back arm!), I am staying with the closed bridge right now until I am a little more comfortable. I will definitely start doing both to find my comfort level as I move forward though.

Once again....great advice from you pool pros :-)!

She called us "pros"....She's such a sweetheart.

Experiment with what works best for you and how you play

I use both comfortably. I can't say equally because if I need maximum draw or follow I must use a closed bridge. For certain shots as well I can only use an open bridge due to the shot situation if I must bridge over another ball. Im not gonna say one is better than than the other because for a lot of people its not, then again for others it is. My best advice is practice all shots and situations with both open adn closed and see what works best for YOU.

You'll find which to use for which shot. I've taken lessons from 3 pros and all recommend/dictated(!) that the closed bridge be used for any power shot. Otherwise use what is comfortable and although I disagree with PJ about using an open bridge on all shots I certainly agree that it's easier to aim a long shot using an open bridge. The trick to long shots I think, is to focus on stroking smoothly and follow thru.

Thorsten hohmann stressed to me using the closed bridge on all shots ,but there are some shots where you have to use the open bridge.

Hmmm

I tend to use an open bridge on nearly every shot. The exceptions are there though. I will tend to use a closed bridge on a long shot where I need to use draw with a monster stroke. I will also tend to use a closed bridge on some rail shots. It really is up to the "comfort" for each shot. The most important determining factor is the "feel". I do what feels the most solid and comfortable for that shot. When I shoot left-handed, I nearly always use an open bridge (I am a righty naturally).

for some reason i've found out now i can't line up or deliver right with an open bridge, and I am much more successful with a closed bridge. i used to use open all the time.

Scaramouche:
Randy G. ... insisted that I should use a closed bridge for draw shots. For me,using a closed bridge for draw shots makes them more powerful and accurate.
How about that.......SPF=randyg
Do you know of a reason that should be true?

You had a lesson with Scott, you should know this answer.....SPF=randyg

Why do you guys advocate the closed bridge for draw shots if there's no reason? If there's a reason, why are you being so coy about it?

I'm waiting for you to answer it....SPF=randyg

You're waiting for me to say whether you know of a reason to teach that a closed bridge is better for draw? OK: I don't think you do.
