Given the global nature of the BCA tournament, I would think there would be an impact....

Anyone not going due to the flu?

Folks will be headed here:
las-vegas-strip-paris.jpg
to get to this,
las-vegas-riviera.jpg

Not to worry ........ there's a higher risk of becoming infected
at any fast-food restaurant near your home than at the BCA.

yeah, I am not to worried... I am still going.. I was just wondering about folks from out of the country. I know things are escalating quickly.... I hear a school was closed here in PHX today due to the swine flu.

I am not worried, either, and am still going, but it sure crossed my mind that I will be around 1000s of more people for ten days. :oink: <--pun

Here is what this amounts to and what people should understand. This flu is pretty much no deadlier then any flu that pops up in any given flu season although this one seem a little worse then normal. The chances of you dying should you get it is almost non existent. The chances of you spreading it should you get it is pretty much a certainty. There in lies the rub.

The W.H.O. works on statistics and probability just like Vegas or any gambler. They know how many people will die from this should it get out of hand. It has nothing to do with how mild or deadly it is. It has to do with how many get it.

They know that if in any given year 30,000 die from flu, then a flu capable of spreading around the world so rapidly will kill 10 or 50 or 100 times that many in a short time. That is just a statistical fact. If anybody should understand this it would be the people on this forum who like to gamble. So, should you travel or ignore the precautions?

It is more a moral issue. Should you get this flu you will probably not die but could be the cause of someone else getting it, maybe thousands of someone else's, who are not as healthy as you or have access to health care like you do, what ever. The only way to stop this flu is to deny it a host. That is why all the warnings. They don't mean, Wash your hands because you might die. They mean wash your hands and so on, so you don't add to the geometric progression that spreads this flu that will certainly cause other people to die.

You know, AID's has been traced to one original host. They know who case no. 1 was.

Then just take all the precautions be careful and have a good time. I am sure you would not want to be the one who brought it into your own household. I have no children but if I did and they got sick because of me, I would feel pretty bad.

I agree.

Cuz, if I brought this home, it would have dire consequences on my ailing Mom. :(

Not to tell scary stories, but My 88 year old mother-in-law lived with us for a year. We took all kinds of precautions with her. My biggest fear was her getting sick she was so frail. When she moved in with my wife's sister, it was no more then a few months when she got sick and died from pneumonia. My sister-in- law works in an office around a lot of people and catches what ever is going around. I hate to say it but I think she pretty much killed her mother.

If there is one thing that is absolutely certain, nobody is certain about how severe a problem this is. WHO raised the threat level to 5 (on a scale of 6). I think we would be foolish to ignore this. Wash your hands, watch the news, wait and see. That's all we can do. This isn't "any other flu". This is a flu with no vaccine that is claiming victims with robust immune systems which means everybody is at risk.

I've got my eyes on cnn.com all day. I'm betting I'll be in Las Vegas next week but I think it's important to understand this all can change in a day.

here's another

I worked with a foreman once, who had great respect for one of the older guys he had on our construction crew. I think the foreman was his apprentice way back when. Anyway, one day the foreman came in with flu-like symptoms, and I guess his "mentor" might have caught the bug, and eventually died from it, (as the story goes). Well, the unpleasant end of the story was that the son of the deceased showed up on the job one day, and was screaming at the foreman, things like, "you killed my father!" It must have been hard on the foreman, because he was kind of an emotional type anyway. I have never agreed with people who come to work sick in this manner anyway, even though I know economically it's really tough for some people to stay home from work.

This was discussed a day & a half ago. No reason for people to cancel their trips to a place that's going to have cleaner breathing air than anywhere else they go.

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=140457

Let's see.... That clean air will be how clean when someone coughs or sneezes in your direction?

If someone with the flu coughs into their hand, then leans on the pool table, or puts their hand on their chair, then you later wind up in the same chair, or leaning on the same pool table...

Somebody will be there who has travelled to Mexico, or has been around someone who travelled to Mexico...

Yeah.... I'm sure there will be an impact, but we'll only know how big the impact is, when it happens. I bet there will be a lot of folks wearing face masks. It would be great if the host would be offering masks to those attending. Hopefully, none of the events will be cancelled over the Swine flu.

Based on a FAQ I just read on CNN.com the odds of catching this flu from an inanimate object is extremely slim.

I would be just a bit more worried about the plane ride, than being in Vegas. As for catching it from someone who works there, chances are the Casino staff will be on the lookout for any kind of symptoms, from their employees. Last thing they want is you being sick, and staying in your room. Of course, if you catch it while there, chances are the symptoms will just be appearing when we leave. I'm not going for BCA this year, but we are for VNEA. This is a little more serious than the regular strains of flu, but from what I read, if you seek treatment when the symptoms occur, and are in decent health, it's not as deadly as some people say.
Best of luck to all of you,,,, win some dough, bring it home, and hopefully don't catch anything you don't want.

My first reaction to this was "duh", sorry. That's going to be the case anywhere you go. The difference between anywhere else you go & Vegas is that they pipe in oxygen. Sadly, it's healthier to breathe in a casino than it is a grocery store.

As stated in the thread link that I posted, if people are adamant about washing their hands and also using hand sanitizer when touching a surface that anyone else would've touched, and being watchful to not stand in the vicinity of someone hacking up a lung, people should be pretty safe.

What amazes me about the irrationality of people is that they don't stop & use common sense. All this other stuff aside, roughly 36,000 (that's thirty six thousand) people die per year from the "regular" flu. So far one person has died of this in the US and that person was a mexican resident that had come to the states for treatment, after they had displayed symptoms for three weeks. The bulk of the deaths have been in Mexico where the living conditions & healthcare isn't nearly what it is here.

The "big deal" is that it's a new strain, not that it's going to kill anyone and everyone that gets it. Why don't people freak out like this every yr during flu season? If they did, there might be less than 36,000 deaths because the nasty people that pee without washing their hands afterwards, or sneeze into their hands without washing might actually stop to do so.
