Point Grooves with lathe

Point Grooves with lathe technique,

I am not sure with this technique, there is any cuemaker here that do your point grooves in your lathe. How do you calculate the degrees?
 
If I understand you correctly........

I assume that you are talking about the degrees of rotation required for cutting the desired number of points (i.e. - 4 pts, 6 pts, 8 pts, etc). In my case, I use one of Chris Hightower's cue lathes. It has a 24 position "indexer" incorporated into the headstock. If you are using a full size lathe metal lathe, I would imagine that there is something similar that you could attach to your lathe.

I understand but problem is that my metal lathe havent positions incorporated into the headstock so I dont believe that I can do it, any idea? or I will to work with my mill
 
Degree wheel

You can mount a "DEGREE WHEEL" on the lathe. These are used to fine
tune the valve timing on race engines. A little work to mount one but
it can be done.

Just a thought - if you have a mill, why not cut point grooves
on the mill. FWIW - everyone I know who has both, use a mill
to cut points.

Truly the way to go. If I had a mill I wouldn't have had to mount the indexer to the lathe chuck. But for those that don't have a mill, it's a cheap way to get going.

Is very important for my to know do same work with different machines, One machine can crack or fail so your work will stop.
If you know several techniques with different machines it will not happen

True but if you have to spend additional time setting up a machine to do something it was not intended for , in additional to sacrificing quality and speed , your time would be better spent fixing the broken machine. :)

But anyway . . .

Yes , you can set up an indexer on a lathe in either location for indexing the points. IMO , the bigger job is fixturing a mount for the cutter of your choice and figuring your cut. Usually point passes have a certain amount of offset so you'll have to work out that as well.

A mill is probably only second to a dedicated point machine and should be your first choice if you have the option , IMO.

Just my worthless thoughts. :)
