what % of shots do you have to make to be classified as a top pro pool player?

My brother and I talked about this and how you have to make almost 100%of your shots. But in other sports you do not have to have such a high % to be a top pro at your sport.

here are some stats I looked up

All time scoring leader Michael Jordan made 59.9% of his shots

Tiger woods with 550 weeks at the #1 ranking has a driving accuracy of 60.98% and greens in regulation of 63.88%

Brett Favre completed a pass 61.6% of the time

All time hits leader Pete Rose got a hit 30.3% of the time

So is it harder to be a top pro pool player ?

just wasting time at work:D

dont think so.. i think its a lot easier to pocket balls in pool. top bowling players score much higher in their sport percentage wise as well.

Thanks to Accu-Stats, we have quite a bit of good data on this topic. Reviewing their 'Tournament Statistics' newsletter from the 1984 season, you can see that the number of misses per 100 shots ranged from 4.6 (Sigel) to 8.3 (Gulyassy & Brunt) for the top 20 players. It's a bit early for math, but I think that translates to a potting percentage of 91.7-95.4%.

I think the overall Accu-Stats rating, which is based on the number of errors of all types (misses, positional errors, and defensive errors), gives a much clearer idea of how well you have to play to be considered a pro, however. Those ratings for the same period ranged from .829 (Strickland) to .636 (tie b/w Cardone, Davenport and a few others) for players who finished in the top 20.

Definitely over 90%. It's common for pro players to go through a set of 10 ball and at the end of the night, they ended up missing maybe 2 balls. You gotta factor in other stuff like 2-way shots that they don't expect to make but leave the other guy hooked... or kicks they're forced to try and which sometimes go in, etc.

This new game 6-pocket is just pure shooting and it'll prolly generate all sorts of interesting stats.

I wonder which games give the higher amount of misses?
Like in 9 ball, there are probably more misses per 100 shots (ignoring safeties) than at straight pool. I'd say in 8 ball there are fewer yet, as in straight pool you're sometimes forced to come with a shot after the break shot, or after a secondary break.

Limiting the discussion to the sports you already named, golf is the only close comparison, because in the other sports there is another player who has legal ways of trying to trip you up, i.e. Jordan had people guarding him, Favre had defenders trying to maul him and the receiver, and Pete Rose had pitchers throwing everything they had to make the ball hard to hit.

Pool and golf, once you're addressing the shot, it's pretty much you and the ball.

An NBA scout once told me that a pro basketball player should hit about 95% unguarded from inside the 3 point line. I would think that a pro pool player could probably make very close to 100% of "makeable" shots on the table, excluding extreme cuts, combos and jump shots.

Time to go practice

Holy Sh*t!! 4.2% by Captain Hook is insane I knew Accu-stats hade a lot of percentile info but that ratio is as close to playing perfect pool as a I have ever seen or heard of.Time to rewatch some of those epic straight pool matches with Mike Sigel and go hit some balls! Is this the best sustained rating ever does anyone know?

As a for-instance from the another sport; Michael Schumacher had to not crash on 100% of the corners (over 6000) to win, place or show in 2002. That is right, he finished every race, won 11 times and finished on the podium (2nd or 3rd) at ever single race of the season. Not a single DNF. Broke every standing yearly record that year.

When hippos are upset, their sweat turns red.

and

The sound you hear when you crack your knuckles is actually the sound of nitrogen gas bubbles bursting.

Just sayin'.[/QUOTE]

the hippo has neither sweat nor sebaceous glands but does have unique glands that produce a viscous red fluid

synouial fluid present in your joints acts as a lubricant. the fluid contains the gases oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide
