I hope everyone hasn't forgotten about this great event that is again scheduled for the end of June. I was fortunate to play in the event 2 years ago; and am entered again this year. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Two years ago the field included Danny Harriman, Grady Mathews, Danny Barouty, Steve Lipsky, Mike Davis, Shawn Wilkie, Mika Immonen, Williebetmore, Thorsten Hohman, Jeanette Lee, Peter Burrows, and AZB'er "alinco". Superior pool, great equipment, and a tremendous time was had by all. The seafood restaurants in that area (Annapolis) are SUPERIOR.

I believe Grady Mathews and Jeanette Lee are also entered this year, but I have NO IDEA WHO ELSE IS PLAYING. Hopefully alinco will clue us in on all the pertinent details; and I am very hopeful that the true 14.1 fans on AZB will support this great event. Pool as it was meant to be played (....errr....well...most of those guys can play a little....except for me...please disregard the last sentence...).

Hey Don. Just sent my money in to Peter Burrows today. Danny Barouty will be playing as well.

I must take issue with you on one thing - we can't find a decent seafood place out there! I know that sounds ridiculous but the first year, we went to a beautiful place on the water, which apparently had run out of lobster. That's sort of like a steakhouse running out of steak.

Last year, we went to a place that so loaded up their food with salt that we almost gagged. The waitress came over and asked what was wrong and Danny, in usual form, said "Nothing. Do you also use this soup to de-ice airport runways?" When the waitress didn't really understand, he continued that he was a representative of the Diamond Salt Company and he was happy to see they were still his #1 customer in Maryland.

Unfortunately, this is an entirely true story.

That is classic Danny Barouty. Many people love to watch him play pool, that is partially because he doesn't talk then. :D

LMAO... I missed this dinner because I was on the verge of death in the hotel room.

If you come to Baltimore you need to eat crabs and not lobster. Crab cakes are also excellent. I will do some research for you and give you a recommendation or two. I am from the othe rside of the city, but my wife is a seafood nut and should know where to go.

When is the event by the way?

The event is June 27/28 at Big Daddy's Billiards in Glen Burnie, MD

I'm in. It'll be my first time playing in this event and it sounds like fun. I think I'll be "busy" when Danny asks if I want to go out to eat though.

Although I won't be playing, I hope to be at Big Daddy's for most of this event. For the first time in several years, I don't have any scheduling conflicts this year. :D

Crabs in Baltimore are like lobster in Maine

Metallicane nails it on the head. Ordering lobster in Baltimore is like ordering bluefish in Key West. Yes, it's "seafood," but the wrong fauna for that location -- something that has to be shipped in. Now, if one attempted to order lobster in Portland (ME) and the restaurant said they were out, that would be a different story.

There is a place in Baltimore, the name of which escapes me (it's been years since I ate there), that serves crab by the literal "table load." Meaning, you sit down at a round picnic-style table with a specially-treated table cloth, and the waitress comes out with a huge tray (the size of the table) and DUMPS the crabs literally onto the table! You eat them right there. They are encrusted with Old Bay seasoning (so be sure NOT to lick your fingers if you find the taste of Old Bay too strong), but the crabs themselves (the meat) are absolutely scrumptious. You can tell anyone that's eaten at this place; even after profuse cleansing of their hands and their face, they have orange fingers and an orange halo around their mouth, sort of like a clown that used orange lipstick and did a hurried job of trying to wash it off. :D

Regardless, I can vouch for the crabs -- if you love crab, you have to try this place! Any Balties here know the name of this place?

Heads up...the Chesapeake is running out of crabs! If you eat crabs in Maryland from now til August, the crabs are probably from Louisiana or Texas. Later in the season there are enough Maryland crabs for Maryland.

Andy

For the uninitiated, be careful if you sit down to a table load of crabs in the Baltimore area. There are certain parts in those crabs that you shouldn't eat. If you do, you will be a very sick puppy.
Get some instructions, before diving into the pile of crabs. :)

Seafood in Baltimore

You might want to try TIMBUKTU on which is right off of Dorsey Rd. only a few miles from Big Daddy's. They serve large meaty crabcakes for a reasonable price.

Good call - we eat there all the time. It is less than 15 minutes from the pool room in Elkridge, MD.

Steve,
We ate at 2 different places (both recommended strongly by Peter Burrows) - and both were FABULOUS.

Perhaps we could arrange a Friday or Saturday evening "straight pool fanatics only" meal (and have Peter direct us to an appropriate venue) - I'll treat Danny and the Lipsky's if it works out (Saturday we had different matches/times and dinner was difficult to coordinate - Friday is better, but I recall you not arriving until Saturday the last time). Of course, I expect you to take it easy on me in the tournament if we match up (no more of those freaking 77 ball runs....); perhaps 3 and stop for you would be fair.

I'll be travelling with your old friend from NYC and my wife - we could have a large and noisy crew; but it is usually lots of fun. Grady Mathews is also planning on playing; I would like him to attend as well if possible.

P.S. - Here is a curiosity. The high runs in competition AGAINST Williebetmore are #1 Mark Wilson = 79. #2 Jeanette Lee = 78 (on THREE different occasions). #3 Steve Lipsky = 77.

Don, so happy you guys will all be there!

Are you sure I ran a 77 against you in that tournament? I thought it was a 67?

Steve,
Yes, you are correct. I searched my thread from 2 years ago: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=65192&highlight=Maryland

I found some interesting stories and pictures from the event; I also found that you only ran a very, very, very weak 67 from the opening break in our match (I've somehow been telling everyone it was a 77 for the last 2 years....oh well, this Alzheimer's is tough to fade). Why was I even worried (errr....except for the fact that 67 takes me about 3 days and 60 innings to accomplish...)????

Hopefully you will do better this year and not embarrass yourself in your opening match like you did that year (I think you ran a 99 or 100....but it took you almost 15 minutes...hopefully you can speed up your play so the matches don't drag on so....).

I will be there (bobby chamberlain)to play again this year.i hope they have the air conditioner problem solved as you had to hammer the break shots to get them to spread.

This sounds like its going to have a pretty strong field. Bobby Hunter told me he was probably going this year.

Was this live streamed? Is anyone going to film any matches?

Hi Don,

I tried to enter. The promoter told me I'd have to enter as a Pro. I used the extra $150 to enter the Turning Stone 9 Ball instead. Best of luck to you. Most importantly, have lots of fun.
