How should I have done this?

I was playing 9ball, the 8 was tied to the bottom rail and this guy managed to get me behind the 9 with about an 1/8th inch to spare. I'm showing what I ended up doing but of course he had a clean shot at the 8 since I couldn't get it to the top rail while leaving the CB on the bottom. Any suggestions?

I would have tried what you did but probably would have missed. How hard did you hit the cue to get there? I am guessing you couldn't get enough speed to do what you wanted to do. I would call that a "damn good safety".

I hit it left of center with a medium stroke. I didn't want to hit too hard because of the angle changes as well as the risky scratch. My hopes were to at least put the CB and OB on opposite long rails of each other...I guess I'm just happy I hit it.
 
I don't think there's not many options but page 2 is another way. It's a draw off the rail.

You're pretty much ****ed from there. You had to make a very good shot to hit the 8, and then get quite lucky not to leave a shot at it. You made the very good shot, you didn't get lucky, and the upshot is there's always next rack.

Thanks for confirming that I did my best... I was really beating myself up over this shot because I thought I was missing something obvious. The only other thing I could think of was tapping it and giving him ball in hand, hoping he wouldn't get from the 8 on the 9 really well...but he was not that dumb so I had to try. lol
 
You really only have two choices. He can hit the kick hard and hope to create some distance, but there is always the possibility of going in off into the corner. You can also try a snooker kick, where you hit it soft and just try to land on top of the 8, in which case you leave no shot or a difficult positional shot to get on the 9.

Since your opponent is probably out anyway I'd forget about the other risks and hit it hard enough to do what I want with the 8. I don't think opposite long rails is likely, but maybe you could get the 8 to the other end of the table...

Think you did great just to hit it. Agree with previous poster, either try to hit it easy and just barely move the 8 and tie it up somehow or hit it as hard as you can and try to get lucky or create distance, otherwise even if you hit it will probably leave a shot. Even missing, your opponent still needs to successfully get from one end of the table to the other so the penalty for missing completely is not as bad as with other positions.

Getting warmer there these days??
