Anyone have any hard times golf stories?

I was trying to remember how they played there the times I have been there. Do they use a wooden score keeping box with balls to mark who follows who?

Remembering back to my days playing at Players in Columbus, I played with sandtraps (red balls) there, but don't remember those at hard times. In Indianapolis at Executive Billiards they play a good daily golf game, but keep score on a chalkboard, unless you are playing with Walt and you might need several chalk boards.

I enjoyed watching the golf games at Hardtimes, Bellflower, CA. Little Al Romero has a shop there making good-hitting sneaky pete's but spends a lot of time downstairs at the golf game.

Many have asked and I don't think there is a single decent quality video of a golf game out there with good players.

I would love for someone to find a way to film a golf game at Hardtimes with top players betting it up.

I have no idea at all who might be the best at it right now. Most of the stories are from years past. Maybe Parica since he's been around forever and still plays.

For those who don't know of these golf games, they are played on Big Bertha, a 6 X 12 snooker table with extremely tight pockets. They use to have a standard bet where they would place a ball on the 7 spot and offer a B-level player, ball-in-hand and have him/her shoot the ball at one of the near corner pockets for $10 a pop.
 
$10 a pop from the spot? sounds insanely tight.

I have a weekly golf game at my house (10' though) and while I would gladly videotape a game... theres really nothing worth videotaping. Normally several swear words about somebody letting their man out, and some occasional side bets between me and my old man.

maybe I'll stream it next week on ustream and people can jump in for a few minutes if they like.

Maybe when TAR is at Hardtimes for the Oscar vs Mora match they can catch Parica playing Golf on Big Bertha :thumbup:
 
They normally play 20-30 per game--1-2 per hickey & 20 per bad hit. Last year Morro & Davenport played Liability on Big Bertha for 30.00 a point. A couple of regular players left for the Summer so the action is a bit slower. Last Nov John Archibold ran 6 and out!! First time ever on Big Bertha. Damn games always seem to make me an hour late. Just can't get out of the room without watching some of the action.
 
Watching those golf games are worse than watching grass grow, paint dry, or preggy modeling pics.

Pure torture!

I can see why there are no videos of those games - no one wants to be liable for the death of many due to boredom...:cool:

I have played Golf & liability Snooker on that table, off & on, since the 60's. Verne Peterson rebuilt the table in the 60's when he owned The Billiard Palace in Bellflower as a tight pocket table for golf.

The last time I played golf on it was early July, 2008 when I was down for the one pocket tournament at Hollywood Billiards. I won a few hundred in the ring golf game with Morgan, Archibald & others and blew it plus a little more playing Little Al & King Kong one pocket.

The best golf players IMO were Mexican Barney & Grady in the old days. Grady was around when Verne rebuilt the table and came back from time to time when he was on the road. Barney, from 4th & Main in LA, was a monster on any golf table. King Kong is the best now and might play better than anyone else ever did.

We played for more $$ in the 60's/70's than they bet now. $30/3 & $50/5 ring games were common and a bad hit was the price of the game, not $20. We never played for less than $20/2. Jim Morgan moved the table down Bellflower Blvd along with quite a few of the pool tables when Butch & Brian Van Syoc (who took over the room from Verne) close the old room in the early 80's. Jim was a very good golf player. we used to tease him that he was the third best in the country but the problem was one & two hung out in his room.

The real big action was Liability Snooker. Denny Searcy was the best player I ever saw on the table and Parica a close 2nd. We played quite a bit of $50 a point in the early 90's when it was down in the corner at Hard Times, where the billiard tables are now. I made a huge score one week in that game but blew most of it back over the next month or so in the same game.

Jimmy Van, Tweedy (Jim Schermerhorn) & I busted a lot of road players on that table over the years who couldn't believe working stiffs would bet that high. You had no chance on Bertha against someone who played on it all the time.
