Update on the Des Moines pool scene

I did get a VIP for Sunday. Jimmy K bought like 3 or 4 and is going to be up there early to save me a seat if possible. I would rather not rush the poker tournament since it is the big one, but I don't think it will take that long with only 10 people. Its not the end of the world regardless. I was a little dissapointed TAR wasn't set up on time and it started 2 hours late (makes for a tired Friday), but still was fun to watch. Props still go to Jason, Adam and Mike for hopping in the box with the big boys.

I was glad I stuck around for it. It was nice seeing a few locals stepping up and giving it a try.

I may pay the ten bucks at the door on Sunday to get in and see the race to 150 so may see ya up there then.

Well it was a 10 Ball ring game...I think you meant Scott realized he couldnt win so he tried to SWITCH the game to 9 ball so he had a better chance but SVB wouldnt switch games. Cmon hes a world champion 10 baller.

Anyways if you like Scott soooo bad just bet me $250 and I'll take SVB. I assume this is Danny...if it's not Danny you dont have action.

I think you will see a different game altogether when they switch to 9ball....

You're right the score is 50-29 SVB...I'll tell you what since Scott is gonna hit a gear tomorrow, I'll give Scott 15 games and bet you $300 on day 2. In other words a day 2 score of 100-85 gets you a win...go on and bet on the home town guy...i like the world champion side.

I have all the bets I want right now.... That was brutal. I have all the respect in the world for Shane. I think he is a super nice guy, and If he was playing anyone other than Scott I would be rooting for him.... I don't know what to think. I wouldn't have guessed in a million years the score would be what it was.:yikes:

On the mini agenda for today...hopefully SVB remembers that break spot and speed, if so this thing could get out of hand pretty fast. Whitey and Jason Chance should be playing some more, Chance is on the heist right now, Whitey is tough though we'll see how that story ends. Jamie Fenton and Gary Lutman are matchin up for $2k today playing 10 ahead on the bar table. I got some $$$ in that Jamie takes it off on the small slate. Too much small action to keep track of, it's going on right now.

I'm fading the small stuff like many others cause it's such a great weekend. It's a pool players utopia right now there, i think SVB and Scott should just stay and race to a 1000 so the pool hall has this many characters and faces in it for a while longer. One weekend is too short IMO! See ya guys tonite, get your bets in, I still wanna bet on Day 2 only...I like Shane...window is cracked!

It was a great weekend....Thanks Big Dog's, Mikey for getting and keeping the ball rolling, and of course Scott and Shane for one of the sweetest sessions of pool I've seen in my life. Each of those guys is smooth as silk.

Lol...I went home picked up a cue and stroked so smooth from having watched these guys. Stroked another smoooooth shot, then another....it felt great to be so smoooooth.....lol....I missed everyone of 'em!

"non" locals opinion.......

Just trying to get a feel for the out-of-towners experience at big dogs compaired to thier home bar/players. Kinda curious as to how pool in Des Moines rates to others out there. With 2 kids, wife, and a 7am-5:30pm job 6 days a week kinda limits my abilities to "get out" and see other pool halls around the states.

Also, anyone have any updates on the side action that was going around this weekend? i caught a bit of it but just curious as most railbirds are on other stuff that went on.

A big thank from Big Dog Billiards

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that attended our biggest event ever!! Whether it was our local die hards, or all the people who drove or flew in, it was great to see you all. You guys are what makes this kind of event possible!!

I need to thank Big Nasty, Justin, Andy, Tanner, The Sleeve, and Beav from TAR for putting on a great production for everyone here and online. What those guys do is awesome for the game!!

I need to thank the staff here at Big Dog's for working some long hours in order to make everyone's weekend as enjoyable as possible!! I think the girls did a great job!! Also, I need to thank Oly for coming down and helping!

And I have to thank both Shane and Scott for coming here and playing some great 9-ball for the fans of pool!! Even though it didn't get to 149-149, it was still pool at it's finest.

It was great to see so many great players in Big Dog's this weekend!! The action was incredible. There were many match-ups that were really fun to watch! When the big show was done for the night, it always seemed like there was another challenge worth watching, or even getting in on. Good to see people fired up about playing!!

Hope to see all of you again soon!!

Looking forward to hearing on the gambling update...especially Scott and Whiteys game with Scott giving him the Dolly spot 9-5 four ahead for $1200.

Big Dog's is a better place to play than what we have locally, but we do some good action here too (being halfway between StL and Chicago is probably the reason for that). Didn't see a snooker table or 3C table though...???

as for action - what happened with Shane and the BIG spot to the guy from Topeka (Sat. nite - I left a bit after 2 AM to drive home)?

Shane won. I believe the score was 11 to 7. I thought the kid had him, then Shane caught a gear...

hard to really catch a gear when you're giving up the breaks, but I knew the kid at some point would see Shane make a couple of really tough outs and realize he's playing SVB.....game over - saw it happen at the DCC too. :p

Trusty Rusty is the man...Chef Jeff was in the house, hopefully didn't get carded too many times haha...Watchez got his cash back(Damn Gary)...1on1pooltourneys is a wild man(no more coin flipping with you sir)...$takehorse was cool(what's up with the bike?)...finally met Thecoats...oh hell list too long...it was fun though wasn't it boys...and yes I did go to work this morning and I am about to pass out right now.

Did Frost and Whitey play like they were supposed too? I had to work this morning also, so I left a little early...

Yeah Whitey won 2 4 ahead sets in a few hours. He shot some really silly out of practice type shots but also came with it a few times. Hard to hold a guy like that to 4 balls since they played 9 to 5. Scott was also switching from the bar table to the big slate and I think that hurt his shotmaking a little bit. The Freezer still pulled quite a few super shots though that were just sick. I think if they played something 11-7 Scott wins it. Not having to spot any balls and just opening the table 9-5 is a way tough game.

Is this the calm before the storm? Is everyone asleep? if I had to wake my ass up for work today, the y'all should have had to as well...Good morning at 4 PM geeeez

Since AZ is boring this morning, I'll tell you guys how I lost $200 to Scott Frost yesterday, he declined to play for the "Frost" Championship and just let me keep my name cuz I am a "COOL" cat. Anyways here goes.

I go into the pool hall after work to hit some balls for a couple hours before dinner and decided to play some tough games for the experience. Anyways I wanted to get a ring game going with Gus, Scott, Gary, Paul, and myself...suffice to say that was impossible. So instead I tell Scott let's play some cheap sets and bullshit around a while, which he was down for since at this point we're cool. Onto the coin flip...I said I want the first break from you til I die..he agreed lol.

So first set he says what spot do you want? I say even sounds about fair with the way he breaks lol and we were playing on a 9 ft. Diamond. I figured let's have some fun. Well I lose the set suprisingly 5-2...yes I was surprised I got to 2(thank god for early 9 balls).

Next set he says how bout the 8? I said we aint there yet buddy, I'll just take the break. I lose 5-4 with the break, had some nice B&R's, and then he promptly says he'd rather give me the last 4 then the break...I then reminded him again...Scott we arent there yet...I'll just take the 8.

The set with the wild 8 was close to 5-4, loser but let me tell you...was shooting very good and was quite happy with myself at this point. Oh let me add in I told Scott if I lose he's gotta adjust every single time and bet what I wanted and he agreed...I also told him he can quit winner because eventually the spot might equal the whole rack lol.

OK now I'm getting the 8 and the last 2...well I got the first break and I think I got to shoot again, but can't quite remember...only game I won he hung the 8 and didnt make me shoot it, then I promptly broke dry...Score 5-1...I broke twice. At this point Scott was used to the table and warmed up...that can be scary let me tell you. SVB sits down and watches us play from this point on. Don't know if that added any fuel to the fire but Scott sure did hit a gear. He also talked some good shit to Shane and Shane threw some good zingers out as well...very funny stuff.

Onto the set getting the 8 and the last 3...it was almost like the set with the 8 and the last 2 but he didn't hang an 8 this time...it was 2 7's that he didnt make me shoot. So once again all I did was break and push(he never gave a push back all day I think he likes to kick and bank a little too much)...Score 5-2...Having SVB watching while you play Scott Frost is a little rough lemme tell you.

Onto the last 4...this set I felt like if I could get a shot after the break I'd whip his ass. This was almost true, I was winning 4-1...then I goofed a very makeable shot and didn't get to shoot again...Set over another 5-4 loser. I paid out because it was about time to go and me, Jason Chance, SVB, and Scott were just recapping "fun" that had SVB caught up the night before. I hit a few balls with the Cuetec SVB played with and told him it played like shit...I asked Scott if he wanted to use it for a second and he said if he got his hands on it that shit was getting burned. It was funny. In all seriousness I'm buying one...he claims it is totally stock and only costs $150. I won't shoot with it but I will sleep with it under the pillow to bring me good luck.

So I had paid Scott $200 and he thanked me for the game, I told him I was paying rent for the "Frost" moniker he then said send the check on the 1st of the months cuz rents due...I told him it was more like paying for a cheap lesson and he agreed. Hell while we were playing he would safe me so bad one time I made him kick out of it and if he didnt hit it I got ball in hand lol. I did this twice...I never got ball in hand!

OK so now Scott is challenging SVB to play some one hole. SVB says I can't play you even because it will kill all his action. Scott says listen I know I am better than you, but you don't need a spot...SVB says but if I beat you even then the world will know I'm the best One Pocket player...this was the most funny thing that came out of his mouth all weekend, everyone was laughing. Scott did say SVB shoots a hell of a one pocket game and really is under rated. He thinks the right game between them is 9-8 on Scott's break and even on Shane's break...pretty strong coming from the top 1 holer in the country(according to Gary Lutman) Scott will quickly remind you that it's the "WORLD".

Moral of the story is Scott can be a puke when he's barking but when he's just chilling he's totally different and likeable. He also plays pro speed rotation pool as well, I never gave him much credit for that but I know. I played him...I KNOW. If SVB gives Scott the 8 playing 10 Ball on a big Diamond I am betting on Scott..please believe that. They did this before in Olathe...Scott won 7 sets like that to SVB winning only 1 set. That tells you the talent gap between being among the best in the world and not mentioned in that breath is quite small. I asked Scott why play 1 hole exclusively like he does...he said cuz rich old guys like to play for a lot of money per game and it's too easy to get beat in rotation pool. I understand. At least I think I do.

In closing, I went over to Gus and told him he has one of my favorite pool quotes ever...he said "What I say"...I said "F*ck you, ask me again"...he started laughing and told me to get Phil's ass up there...it was funny. Either he remembered or someone else reminded him.

"Ask me again!"
