Playing 9 Ball--Making the Wing Ball on Break

Let's assume that the rack is tight, with no gaps. On some tables it is impossible to rack exactly on the spot, so it either is a lil forward or slightly below the spot. If it is below the spot it seems much easier to make the wing ball just from the natural way it flies toward the hole.
If it is above the spot it wants to hit a lil higher on the side rail above the hole.
My question is; when you rack slightly above the spot, how do you adjust to consistantly make the wing ball. Do you move the cue ball more to the rail or more to the center of the table? Also, does it help to take some speed off of your break? Do you aim to hit the 1 ball a lil on the side, kind of like a cut break? What helps to make the wing ball more consistantly whan racking slightly high on the spot?
Is this subject covered in Joe Tuckers racking secrets? If so, it would be worth the price for this info alone. Thanks in advance for any and all info on this folks.

I would like to know if this is covered in Joe's dvd ( racking secrets) or not also. A few action matches ago I bet Joe on, I was going to ask for the dvd instead of cash...but I lost. I have another option. I say to the wife, "That's a good deal and I would love one, but I'm not paying that much for it. Maybe I can find a used one somewhere". Then like magic the thing comes in the mail or UPS the next week. Johnnyt

Yes, it's covered in the DVD. And he recommends moving the
cueball closer to the center of the table. He covers alot more
also so I'd definitely recommend buying the dvd

That is a good question C.P. This very thing came up when i was playing Tom Niel in a sunday tournie. I had to rack the balls a little high to get them to freeze, when i did this I noticed Tom wasn't making anything on the break. That got me thinking of why this was happening. I know when I rack for myself for now on to get that one ball on the spot! Tom still beat me and strung 2 together doing it.

The DVD not only covers 9-ball but it also covers 8-ball, 10-ball, one pocket and straight pool. It is worth the money 5 times over.

I don't think he specifically addresses the issue of the rack being placed high on the spot or above the spot, but he does tell you what to do if the wing ball is hitting the long rail, which is what you would expect from a high rack. Moving your cueball closer to the cushion will cause the wing ball to take a lower path, closer to the pocket.

Lol, since I don't know his wife I may have to go the conventional way and buy one. You are pretty smooth.;)

I've noticed that a few of those tables have a divot where you rack the 1 ball. It forces you to move it forward about half a spot to freeze em.
Tom is one tough customer for sure.

This is what I normally do. I just wanted to confirm it with somebody else. Thanks for info, rep to ya.

Alright maybe I read the question wrong. But IIRC if the wing ball is hitting the long rail you move the cue ball closer to the center of the table in order to "push" the ball lower by applying more force in the hit. If its hitting the bottom rail then u put the cue ball closer to the rail. Im pretty sure this is what he recomended, ill double check the dvd later on tonight.

All right. I got to know the secrets. I just bought the Joe Tucker dvd racking secrets. Wife wouldn't bite on buying it for me, so I had to spring for it myself. Keyboard got a little wet from the sweat and tears, but I got through the purchase with no blood pressure problems. Now I need to set someone up (err, play someone) to get my money back with intrest after I watch it and practice it. Johnnyt

If money were no object, I'd buy every pool player a copy of Joe's DVD because within a few months after that, I think we'd all want to play 10-ball, rack your own.

First league night after I watched it I tried the 2nd ball 8-ball break and snapped it in. It's worth it :) I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself ordering it.
