Tournament success without WPA

even though WPA did what they could to hurt the event, the world 14.1 was still a great tournament and had excellent play and matches. some of the euopean players there mentioned they got a call from wpa saying to not goto the event this year. fortunatly for us fans they still went ! especially for Stefan Cohen who won the event, and deservedly should be recognized as the 2009 World 14.1 champion

events like the World straight pool, Derby City, US Open 9b, Predator 10Ball and many others are not sanctioned and draw massive international fields. so whats the point? The upcoming Galveston event, I heard some european players not allowed to go cause their federation said not sanctioned.
threatening promoters, forcing players to pay 5%, and blackballing is pretty wrong especially in todays economy and age. someone ,maybe the players, need to do something to stop this nonsense

It was a fine tournament that I watched every day. It did not however meet my criteria for a World Championship and i guess without the WPA sanctioning in a few years it will be forgotten and listed nowhere.

You can organize as many tournaments as you wish but good luck trying to organize "world championships" without a governing body and their sanctioning. I can see only one continent trying to get rid of governing bodies time after time and make everything their way. The governing body makes sure all players around the globe are treated equally when choosing players for the championships and wants to see that the prize pool is large enough to earn to be a "major" tournament.

Just my $0.02, no offense.

If in the eyes of the media, fans and the players agree than I'd consider it a world championship. There were decades of world championships before with Mizerak, Sigel, Mosconi, etc and I would never discount those because of no WPA

From the media coverage and fan support, and not to mention probably 3-4 of the top favorites to win were still there(including Ortmann who played supernatural) Id say Cohen is deserving of being the 2009 World 14.1 Champ

The WPA might work in other counties but it don't work in the US for whatever reason you want to think. As long as there is NO national org. in the US, nothing will work much. Johnnyt

Agreed 100%. It's sad that BCA has practically no role whatsoever in these things...

I'm glad the media agrees that Cohen is deserving of being the recognized World Champion of 14.1
