What are you doing different

highrun55,

You need to attract the non players and casual players. Whether everyone agrees or not, most of the time, the better players are there to make money, the rest are there to spend money, and that is the bottom line. If you want to get a buzz going with some free word of mouth advertising, do what I did at a little place I ran a long time ago that was suffering the same way. One night a week, take a big clear jar and put 10 $1 bills in it. When someone breaks playing eight ball, they can put $1 through a slot in the lid of the jar, and if they make the eight ball without scratching they win what ever is in the jar. You will be amazed how quickly the pot will grow, and this will just feed the frenzy for everyone to try more. The word will get out and draw people, because everyone has an equal chance to win, not just the better players. Paint a big sign on the window with shoe polish, say something like Break the Bank on Sat. Night. Always have the jar up behind the counter where people can see all the cash in it, even on the nights when you are not doing it, to remind them to come in on Sat night. Just a thought, we had a lot of fun with it. Here are a couple do's and don'ts you might want to consider.

Don't let the same person keep feeding the kitty rack after rack until they win, tell them that is not allowed so everyone has a chance to win.

Inspect the rack or rack them yourself, as to make sure of a good rack, and the eight ball is where it should be. (someone, will try to screw you)

Put their picture up somewhere when they break the bank.

After someone wins you could even take $10 or $20 of the winnings to start the next bank.

Thanks, have done this before, not a lot of success though.

25 wings for ONLY $6.00 and sold 525 wings in two days. Business was alot better this weekend, compared to the last few weekends. Everyone share what is working NOW.

Fri-Sat nights sat here by myself from 6 pm to close, as usual, but it is a holiday weekend
Once it gets colder here in Pa. things should improve.

Just an observation. On your price list it states that 1 thru 8 players on a table will be charged either $4.50, or $6 per hour each, dependent on the time of day.

Is that reasonable? I've been around for a while, and in most rooms where I've paid attention to their rates, there's usually a limit of maybe up to 4 players @ regular rate and beyond that, any charge for additional players usually becomes nominal.

Rooms need to be customer friendly, or at least neutral, IMO.

PS: Nice room.

Wings are incredibly messy to eat. Does this create an issue with people getting greasy, grimy fingers on your felt and equipment?

Ruark

Didn't have any problems. We serve food all the time so I always tell them to make sure they DON'T get it everywhere. I have tile floor and I find food mostly on the floor but that is not hard to clean up. Some took the wings to go and some eat in then spent money on beer, table rent. Seems like you have to ALWAYS HAVE A SPECIAL.

Still trying every day

I tried different rate structures in the past and it never seemed to bring in any more people,
some people say I dont charge enough.

My rates are about standard in this area. I cant pay my bills plus my personal bills if I do any other way.

There is very little action at all either.

I dont have alcohol or a big food menu, just snacks and sodas. I need a license just to sell a hot dog.
thanks for your thoughts.

I saw your statement about needing a license to sell a hot dog.

I feel your pain with dealing with all the absurd licenses and permits needed to run a business. I hear all the time how I should do this and do that with food. Put in a grill etc. If I put in a grill I need about $60,000 worth of improvement in terms of fire suppression systems and firewall construction. Its a joke to do that just to cook a hamburger. Not to mention my fire insurance would double for having a grill.

But maybe GIVE away hot dogs cooked outside on a grill to PAYING customers might do something. Every Sunday give a BBQ dinner with an hour of pool. Pre packaged burger with bag of chips. If you are cooking outside and not charging for it?? Just an idea.

MOST of the public does NOT wash their hands. Period. After food or snacks or going to the bathroom. Its why house cues are so "sticky" all the time. Hard to have decent equipment AND serve food. You feel like you're a pre-school teacher making all the 40 yr old kiddies use soap and water all day. :grin-square:
