straight pool league in NYC

If anyone is interested in joining the Amsterdam Straight Pool league a new season is starting up soon. While the Monday night league is fast filling up the Saturday afternoon group is still open. The season runs through the rest of the year and players of all strengths are welcome. Last season we had almost 90! players from beginners to masters, like the formidable Steve Lipsky. The format is a hybrid with players divided into groups of similar strength playing even with each other throughout the season. When the playoffs come, player ratings are adjusted based on performance, and then handicaps are used. All the different leagues will be having their finals tomorrow night and it will be a lot of fun. So for information call Amsterdam or come on down and ask for Danny Barouty. (I'm the league director). Hope to see you.

WOW!

Amsterdam Billiards Club. (This is Ames, Mister)
The Mecca of Straight Pool.

90 players. I can't even imagine.

We have 20 at Red Shoes and a total of 27 at the Illinois Billiard Club and it seems tough to keep track of everything.

Keeping the game alive.

Hey Dan, Just curious ?

Hey Dan,
I'm just curious why you guys don't participate in the
www.14and1.com league. This will be going on the third year
since the league has started. The final is held at Atlantic city Billiard Club
in NJ. It sure would be nice to see more players of different calibers getting
in this.

nyc 14.1 league

Thanks for the comments. I thought I hit the wrong keys. We do have a pretty busy league, actually 2, one on Monday with about 57 and Saturday with 29, so far.
I haven't joined any other leagues as I am the director of the league not the owner of Amsterdam Billiards. Anyone looking to do business with Amsterdam should contact management there.
I have found the best way to hold a handicapped league, I don't use handicaps! With a large player pool to draw upon I divide the players into evenly matched groups who play even-up throughout the season. Depending on the size of the divisions a number of players advance to the dingle elimination playoffs. It is then that we use handicaps which have been recalibrated to reflect performances during the regular season.
The positives of the system far outweigh the negatives and several players seem to be making progress and are happy with the competition, but more of that another time.
Monday is closed out but the new season for Saturday begins on the 26th and there still is room. So be there between 11 and noon if you are interested in playing or just come by and hang out and say hilo.

For anyone not familiar with Danny, he is a great guy and runs a top-notch league.
