Real-Time Pool Audio

The pool media today has video, print, and Internet presence. One thing that is missing, however, is audio.

Pat Fleming was the pioneer in recording pool matches of high-profile events with Accu-Stats. When I see the equipment at, say, the U.S. Open, it is mind-boggling. It is like a traveling TV show. Of course, in order to get a high-quality video, you need this kind of equipment.

The pool Internet websites are plentiful today, with AzBilliards being the main hub, but I am sure everybody has their favorites. :smiling-heart:

The print media is Billiards Digest, InsidePOOL, Pool and Billiards Magazine, Professor Q-Ball's National Pool and 3-Cushion News, and several others.

Livestreaming has taken off in recent times, and though I do not understand the technology, UStream seems to provide the means to do this. Most pool diehards enjoy the comraderie on livestreams as Internet railbirds, sweating the matches together in chat. Also, there is something to be said about immediate gratification, learning who won what now, as opposed to reading all about it the next morning. :grin-square:

I have enjoyed a few livestreams, but I don't have enough hours in the day to devote to watching some of the longer matches that go more than few hours. :boring2:

They say pool is not a spectator sport. I have watched pool for hours and hours in pool rooms, but on livestreams, spending multiple hours in front of my computer screen, it is just not the same for me. I don't get the same thrill as I do sitting in the bleachers of the U.S. Open. :o

Jon Miller is an American sportscaster, known primarily for his broadcasts of Major League Baseball. He is currently employed as a play-by-play announcer by the San Francisco Giants and ESPN. Radio sportscasters must be good communicators, like Jon Miller, in order to attract a listening audience. ESPN has a radio station.

Pool has its own great communicators a/k/a sportscasters by way of Grady Mathews, Danny DiLiberto, Billy Incardona, Buddy Hall, Jim Wech, Jerry Forsyth, Jay Helfert, JoeyA, just to name a few.

Would it be possible to have a real-time audio livestream of pool? One could sweat the pool matches driving in the car, mowing the lawn, doing housecleaning, shopping, whatever, and escape the confinement of being in front of the monitor all of those hours. :idea2:

So what do you think? Since pool media already consists of video, print, and Internet, would real-time audio work? Please share your thoughts. :indecisive:

Due to the lack of response, I am guessing that the concept of real-time audio isn't a good idea. :o

Oh, well, back to the drawing board!

I don't know about anyone else, but I think it is a great idea. I wouldn't mind having the radio on listening to the broadcast instead of staring at a computer screen for hours.

I assume you're on the Eastern seaboard somewhere (D.C.)? You wrote your original post at 5:18am, and then wrote the above about 2 hours later. The working class stiffs (e.g. me) are only scratching their heads, rubbing the morning sleep out of their eyes, and getting their morning coffee and egg sandwich by then! :D

Jeez, high expectations for us AZB diehards! :D

As for real-time audio, I think it's a great idea. The closest similar media type I'm aware of at the moment, is AZB's own "Run Out Radio," however, an Internet-enabled media player would be required for this -- not sure if this is even remotely in the ball park of your idea.

Hope this is helpful,
-Sean

You're right about me being up so early. I'd do anything to have sleep, like 8 hours a night. What a luxury! :sorry:

RunOut Radio is pre-recorded, and it is an excellent production for sure. The interviews are very informative, and I've listened to quite a few of them myself. It is nice that you can select the time to listen to them, as opposed to it being live.

As Joe Pickens puts it, I don't have time to stare at the computer screen for hours and hours either. I don't even spend that much time watching TV.

I do think, though, if there was a way to livestream the audio-only portions of the pool matches with our cadre of pool broadcasters, it might be a hit.

Listen to Jonathan Miller describe one of the most entertaining baseball blunders ever. If I couldn't see the blunder and was only listening to him on the radio, I would totally enjoy it thoroughly without the video. Here's the 1-minute link: Ruben Rivera Running the Bases

Audio-only live feeds would require less equipment, and I would be more inclined to listen to the audio-only of JoeyA and Jerry Forsyth, for example, than sitting in front of my computer for 7, 8, 9, and 10 hours.

Pool truly is not a spectator sport, unless you're there in person. Now, I am not saying I don't enjoy the livestreams. So please don't misunderstand my post. What I am saying is that I don't have the time to devote to watching livestream, and that livestreaming audio might be a better fit for some pool enthusiasts like me! :)

I would be able to hear more of the live pool action via audio. I cannot sit in front of the computer for that many hours. I have to do it for my job, and I need a break sometimes. LOL!
