what tip comes on a McDermott? (other tip questions within)

i am having some issues with the tip on my main cue .. it is a McDermott C110

http://www.mcdermottcue.com/C110_a.asp

the issue is, as i shoot more i have made adjustments to the cue it's self ... first was adjusting the weight to about as light as it can go... next one was going from a tip shape of a Nickle to a Dime shape (which i liked a whole lot better) ...

but after a little bit of making that change i noticed something ... i can shape the tip (what came on it) and within about 2 games it has been flattened back to a nickle shape ... it seems to happen within the first 5 or 6 shots ... but by the second game it is almost smooth again and nearly flat ...

i would assume i need a different kind of tip, and maybe one that is a little harder .. but i am not sure how that will affect how i shoot (which is far from perfect, most of my shots are a little harder then they should be. but i am working on getting that under control more) ..

i have been reading over many posts on the forum in the past few weeks .. but in all honesty i feel about as lost as before i started reading ... so looking for some input from others (and help identifying what kind of tip may be on the cue so i have a better idea of what i have as compared to what i need to go to next) ...

I have a C100 that i break with ... and the tip does fine on it .. but i leave it with a nickle shape so it doesn't show up on it like it does on the main one i use...

thanks for your help....

McDermott's usually come with a Triangle tip - one of the best on the market for retaining it's shape. Have no idea why you're having a problem with it. I can only guess that it might be a bad tip. Tips are a personal preference thing. I like layered tips. My favorites are Moori Medium, Kamui Black hard, and Wizard medium. For a really hard inexpensive layered tip, try a Super Pro (my favorite for a while). Ask around and some players may let you test a few of these tips to see how you like the hit. Good luck with your quest.

hmmm thanks for letting me know what brand tip it is at least ... been waiting on an email back from McDermott for a bit about tip info before i decided to just post it here .. i wonder if it is a soft or a med/soft since it will loose it's shape so quickly ...

i can put a fresh dime shape on it .. and after two or three hits you can already see a visual difference in the shape without even using a guage ...

yeah i know they are a presonal prefrence thing ... as is most pool equipment ... but its better to be informed before starting to purchase random stuff ...

if i decide to try another tip out have been considering picking up a spare shaft that is smaller then 13mm so will prob make both purchases at the same time ...

have asked around at the local place i shoot at .. but most everyone there doesn't even have a clue what kind of tip they have .. and the few that do, wouldn't even consider letting someone else try their cue out .. (plus would be hard to judge on a cue that has a different feel then what i am used to i think) ... most of the ones i have talked to just tell me that they have a local guy put a new tip on their cue about once a year but they don't really know what kind it is other then a medium or medium / hard ...

There is not a "right" tip for the McDermott. Every kind of tip is playable after you adjusted to it.

I have had the same experience with a LePro on my first cue, and exchanged it for a Talisman Medium. They keep their shape very well. My current tip is about 1.5 years old. I shaped the Dime with a Willard and have not reshaped it in months - I checked, but it does still fit the gauge very well.

Best regards,

Detlev

yes i know there is no 'right' tip ... mostly just trying to make a decision and sometimes its better to talk about it before jumping in and doing it...

if i can find out the 'hardness' of the current tip i would be more then willing to just go up a step and see how i like it .. if it keeps its shape i would be happy .. as long as it isn't rock hard and real smooth ..

Your cue was made with a Triangle tip. In a box of 50, I usually get 10-20 that are way too soft or rotten. Chances are, you got one of the tips that are too soft. Take it to your local repair guy and have it replaced. A nice firm Triangle will hold its shape for a very long time.

thats good to know about their ratio on good vs bad in the box ... will try to catch up with the local person and see if he keeps Triangle tips and if he checks them out before installing them ...
