Hey Guys, There was a post awile back about carbide inserts that cut real well. Im not sure what manufacturer they were or where to get them. Also not sure which holding tool they need. I think they has a radius edge that allowed them to make cleaner cuts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sharp Tools Rule

Hi,

Just my opinion, but I seem to do a lot better when my tools are very sharp. If you have a grinder with a green wheel, just touch them up from time to time to get a very clean cut without chatter. Same applies to carbide router flukes, dull or round make for chattering when tapering.

It might be that you could grind these to do a good job, but I think the point
is that these cut wood like butter
- which I guess was Marks intention to dig in to.

Totally agree with Dick, I have done tapering on my CNC in both horizontal
and vertical orientation and compared to the non hazel these inserts give I'm
tempted to add tapering arrangement to my lathe.
It should be mentioned that the end mills used on the CNC was cheap
horrible worn out crap so it most likely not reflect the results that many get.

Anyway, highly recommended and get a beefy holder and your on.

I seldom use a router when tapering dowels. I sometimes even start with squares and turn to tapered dowels just using those inserts. Makes much less of a mess as the chips aren't flying everywhere. These just cut long ribbons of of wood off of the dowel. I love them.

Do you use these for doing the shaft tapers all the way thru, or only the inital taper?

No, they can't be used for shaft tapering. The spindle are to flexible at those sizes and must be turned to slowly. I just use for basic prong, handle work and facing. Sorry I wasn't clearer on what I was using them for. I have a saw shaft machine for my shaft work.
