Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Pride...I say you get one strike...if shit happens it happens....but if you don't play once you will have to get up to date on your current bill and post from now on.

you guys a pretty easy on non-payers....you lose a $50 bet with $11 and change in your pocket - if ATM is not an option, drive to girlfriend's house. She's busted too...find a buddy who'll float ya. No dice? How's about mom and pop? Still no money? Gentle persuasion  And that's an understanding opponent....

Hell, I had to fork out an extra $92 the first week of pool league just to muster a team!

I'm still waiting for $70 of it back. I usually get it back from the payouts at the end of the year, but we're in last place now so that's probably not gonna happen.

Just curious.......

Why don't people discuss these kind of things before people play? Like....
What do you wanna play for?
Whats the race/set?
Who gets the breaks?
Winner/loser breaks?
Heads/tails?
DO YOU HAVE MONEY 'ON YOU' TO PAY IF YOU LOSE????

One of the best quotes(for gambling) I've ever seen: CARRY CASH, IT DOESN'T WEIGH MUCH!

Brad that's easy enough done with new matchups or when no ego and pride is involved. It also gives away some info that a guy who has say $50 goes to play a game where they can win $200. If the guy with more money likes the game he would rather wait until the broke guy has more money and not blow the game for cheap. The broke guy also likes being able to quad up on a single barrell. Maybe everyone should post every single time!

Pride and ego certainly factor in and I actually think they are the dominant factor in the majority of bad matchups. People get their mouth running and then their blood pressure rises and usually someone ends up going off. A lot of the air getting shot is coming from regular games though. People who play often enough you get complacent cuz they have paid off, or you think their normal backer is involved who you know has money only to find out he pulled up 2 sets before right? I've seen so much in my short time here, you almost never know what to expect.

Rusty I know what you mean. I know guys in your area, way different environment, actually the environment that I am used to. Stiffers are the lowest of the low people to gamble with. At least a nit tries to get you on the front end of a deal...a stiffer gets you on the back end which is extremely worse. In NC if you stiffed someone you couldnt even play anywhere, like if you stiffed someone in Brass Tap and they found out at Browns or King Street you automatically can't go in any other pool room. They may as well quit pool because they won't be allowed in anywhere til the debt is right. Here nothing like that is even thought of, in fact it usually gets laughed at as everyone gets made a fool of. I never got stiffed until I got here...I seen a guy sell a truck to pay a debt before...pay off por favor!

Giving people the benefit of the doubt here usually just adds up to free money and you being the sucker pop of the day. If you get paid back you actually feel like you won money in most instances.

Duly noted....we aren't all like this. I pay on the spot 100% of the time when I lose.

In Des Moines, some of the biggest stiffers are actually looked up to by some...I'll never understand that. But, as long as the other gamblers continue to play these guys, it will never end.

On occasion, my favorite match to watch, is when both players are firing air. In fact, the Pillars of Character originated in the pool hall.

What - IOU's aren't the same as cash?? Maybe if they just write a check?

Brad - what's your day look like?? Maybe at 3??

3 is looking ruff. I got a showing today from 2-4. But tonite, after I steal all your candy( no tootsie rolls or sweet tarts, you betta have the chocolate!), is looking decent!

Get bent -- I'll give you the stuff I save for the kids I don't like. Plus, we're just handing out toothbrushes this year.

It'd be after 9 or so before I get anywhere -- if I do.

We're thinking about putting together a $50 ring game in a few Saturdays, followed by a $30 Sunday 1 hole tourney up at Jimmy's in Minneapolis. Any Iowans interested in coming up north for some action?

If I am free I would like to come up and reciprocate some of the love you guys showed for my game. If you guys have a Calcutta I'll take Demi for $200 as an opening bid and yes I can send money through my phone if I get outbid and I'm not there.

I agree, not all guys that play pool in Des Moines are gonna stiff you! There has been a select group that will do it every chance they get though, which makes everyone look bad. At times it gives the whole town a bad name. I do like the idea of not letting people that have gambling debts not play, but then certain bars wouldn't make any money. It's not the pool hall's problem, but nobody will handle it on a personal level. They just let it keep happening, over and over and over again. Why would anyone want to gamble with someone that they know has no money? Hmm, post up or don't play!! It's not rocket science, is it??!!

It's not rocket science at all. However you just never know when it's coming. Then you kind of think like I been getting paid why wouldnt I get paid? You don't want to insult a guy and then he doesnt wanna gamble with you. There's a fine line.

I figured out the top line in DSM if you are probably gonna get air barrelled. If someone says "pay after every set" that means they are gonna play at some point without any money.

I know years ago when Don M ran Encounters when Phil would lose and not pay, he would be barred til he paid his debt.

Someone told me about that, might have been you come to think of it, but I have heard of that here which is weird because he's tops out of all the pool guys. Usually if someone like that sets an example its generally a rule that will get followed. That Don was on to something.

I wasn't allowed to do that, even though I really wanted to at times!! The bar loses money, and they can always go somewhere else to play. Sucks!

I'd like to do a little 5 man team one pocket match up in a 25 game format. It can be played as a point a ball and 10 if you win the game. My team will consist of players from my valley/bca team.
The Oilman
The Legend
The Locksmith
Little Efren
and Me

Build a team and put up some cash.
