Sledgehammer ferulle change?

I have a Sledgehammer now, and I guess they have finally made them ill-legal (Phenolic tips) in some events. I find this so odd, cause there are so many manufacturers using them, Predator, Mcdermott Sledgehammer, Fury, Bunjee.

So my question is: Can I have simply cut off about 1/2 of my ferulle and install a super hard break tip to it? I would like to attain some low deflection qualities just in case I break 2nd ball in some 8 ball games.

Or should I have the ferulle removed and install a standard short ferulle with a hard break tip?

There has been some talk about the Samsara break tip, but is there any others to consider?

thank you for your time

And if you want leather...then the Samsara is the best choice. Although its clearly leather, you'll swear its phenolic...about 90% as hard with that same phenolic "tink" sound.

I wanted to reduce as much mass from the front end of the cue as much as possible, hence reduce deflection as much as possible.

Is there anything bad that can happen with shortening the ferulle by half it's original size? ...then to install the Samsara tip.

Nope. I did this on my break cue and installed the Samsara Break Tip. This combo is a lot better then the 1 piece phenolic.

Hi bnall, thxs, did u notice if the ferulle was a threaded one?

And how did u find the improvement? More controll on the cue ball? What did you find?

I wouldnt go to an uncapped ferrule. Tip may pop off. Just a heads up may or may not. Also LD for a break cue wont effect much imo... Hit the square and thats it

Ok, so apparently i had a small crack in the Sledgehammer ferrule. And I also noticed that the top started to mushroom as well.

My cue tech, removed about 1/2 the ferulle on his lathe, we saw the wood tendon, I still didn't receive my Samsara tip yet, should be here next week.

So my cue tech just glued a Talisman bk tip on, and reshaped. Looks really good with such of a short ferrule, breaking with the new tip, feels kinda soft compared to the Sledge Phenolic. And I definitely don't sink as many balls on the break...

Feels like a older Predator bK, doesn't have the pop i guess. Is this because of?
A) the uncapped Ferrule?
B) the Talisman bk tip is too soft?
c) maybe a combination of both?

What do you guy think? I miss my Sledge, so I think I will get him to re-install another capped Phenolic ferulle and then the Samsara tip when it arrives.

I'll only say this... The Samsara JB tip is far superior to the Talisman BK. It honestly does feel almost like phenolic, but has that leather grip. What you put on is the equivalent of a worn down old school Moori hard. Some folks would play with that tip - don't ask me how, but they do.
Stick with advice from the cue makers on technical integrity matters w/ the ferrule. Little things matter, and they know how.

Jack if you feel you really want to replace the ferrule...let me recommend Ivorine 4. This is without doubt the strongest material ever offered in the billiards industry. It can be used capped or not...with zero concern of ever having any problems. I give a lifetime warranty. Its simply an absolute bulletproof option. Combined with the Samsara tip...you'd then have the highest level of legal performance.

Got the Samsara installed, and it hits a ton, thanks for all the replies,
the Samsara Rocks, I highly recomend it!
